Thought this was so good I'd use it agan........also don't feed the trolls people ffs .......the Pennaissance starts now......... No thread?
If only you could take Tom Hanks range across material, Denzel Washington's dramatic chops and Sean Penn's intense OTT vividness ....then .you'd have an actor from the 80s who could rival the 70 big guns.........instead they just have 6 Oscars and encourage Message Board wars........... '

Didn't this movie get a poor reception on the festival circuit? When it was called Black Flies.
Yeah, just checked. Currently at 47% on RT and 41 on Metacritic.

My film critic pal says - as of about 15 minutes ago - that this is Penn's best performance in a looooooong time but it's real downbeat stuff, says he's aces here though......I don't really think Black Flies is a much better title tbh..........both titles blow ..... I joked about the Pennaissance earlier ^ but who knows............maybe he has a decent role opposite DiCap in the PTA (?) - Penn knows everybody ..... he could always end up in one big film in a big way (as opposed to Asphalt City I mean)..... The not often seen lately Michael Pitt is in this too. ..........hmmmmmmmmmm

From what I've read so far, Penn is getting stronger notices overall for his work in Daddio than he's gotten for this one.
But in all likelihood the real resurgence will be with his role in the new P.T. Anderson film. The trades are referring to it as one of the three central roles of the film, alongside DiCaprio and Regina Hall.
I haven't read Vineland, but based on a summary of the plot and characters, I assume Penn must be playing Brock Vond, the villain of the piece? On paper it looks like the most exciting character and project Penn has been involved in since Milk...

didn't feel like starting a new thread for this, but I liked it quite a bit. Penn is indeed really strong but Tye Sheridan is even better, and Michael Pitt I'm pleased to discover is just as unhinged and terrifying as ever. Tonally similar to Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire's even better first film from 2017. It's a chaotic and gritty slice of life with Sheridan's character drifting from one EMT nightshift to another in a never-ending downward spiral through the dirty streets and apt buildings of NYC, a job though necessary Sauvaire treats as its own kind of prison which consumes those who can't take the heat. Some moments felt a bit far-fetched in their nastiness (one involving a dead dog), and the Sheridan character's spiral as communicated through the scenes with his fuckbuddy--a woman who has zero development but starts showing up in more and more scenes--were vague and unsatisfying (some guys would rather strangle their gfs during sex than get therapy ), but it's an overall compelling viewing experience that keeps you hooked the whole time. Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire has proven his mettle handling bleak material in gritty environs and I can't wait to see where he goes next. 7.5-ish, close to an 8. Fans of A Prayer Before Dawn should check it out.
