I sort of vaguely recall Powell saying something about Denzel encouraging him to move to Hollywood after casting him in The Great Debaters, but it seems to run a bit deeper than that going by this video below. The producers of The Great Debaters didn't want Powell, but Denzel said he believed in him and asked him to go to the table read and prove the producers wrong.
Then Denzel introduced him to his agent, who said him and Denzel both believed he had what it takes to make it in Hollywood, and that's why he came. So as he did with Austin Butler, Denzel essentially mentored Powell and took him under his wing. Powell says he's indebted to Denzel because of what he did for him and his career.
Powell looks like he's going to be one of the more significant younger generation new of leading men with the box office success of Anyone But You. Reviews for his performance in Hit Man (directed by Richard Linklater) were outstanding on the festival circuit, and it's out later this year . I can see why Linklater cast him....he feels like he has similar potential to Matthew McConaughey, who made his mark in early Linklater projects .

The more I see Glen Powell in things, the more convinced I am that he has the potential to be our generation's Bill Paxton. And we are in dire need of that.

He's doing a good job carving out a role for himself in Hollywood with Anyone But You and the upcoming Twisters. He also co-wrote Hit Man so there's potential there for future collaborations since Linklater sticks to his guys.

I loved me some Bill Paxton, but Powell has the potential to be a gigantic movie star, which Paxton never did or was. I feel like my comparison to Matthew McConaughey works a bit better ( who at times was a huge movie star). Both movie star handsome, both from Texas, both charming and charismatic dudes who could easily coast on that, but both have real chops underneath that. I really want to see Hit Man.

There's something nervy about Powell's acting style that fits more with Paxton than with McConaughey, at least to me.

He also co-wrote Hit Man so there's potential there for future collaborations since Linklater sticks to his guys. Apparently, Powell has been writing a Captain Planet movie for Leonardo DiCaprio's production company for a few years now ( Seems Leo is okay with superhero films, if they have an environmental theme, as he has the rights to the Captain Planet IP ). Powell may or may not play the titular role. Considering the superhero genre seems to be in decline though, not sure if this as good an idea as it might have seemed a few years ago. But you never know, if they do something interesting/ironic with it, maybe it could be a male Barbie type of property. But the fact that he's a proper writer leads me to think he could easily take the George Clooney/ Bradley Cooper route and become a major triple threat (actor/writer/director).

At this point, I think there is a strong argument to be made that Denzel is the single most influential actor, since Robert DeNiro. And before that Marlon Brando. It's taken for granted how much influence Denzel holds over younger generations of black or African-American actors.
But his hold on younger generations of non-black actors seems pretty strong. From (the slightly older) Jared Leto calling him his GOAT, to his impact on the likes of Butler and Powell. Even Timothee Chalamet cited watching Denzel on Broadway in Fences was a gamechanger for him in his development as a young actor. All three of these younger leading men, who will be probably dominating our screens for years to come all cite Washington as a primary influence, if not their most primary influence as actors.

Props to Denzel. I haven't seen The Great Debaters yet despite liking Antwone Fisher, but Powell is indeed a major talent; tremendous in Everybody Wants Some!!

At this point, I think there is a strong argument to be made that Denzel is the single most influential actor, since Robert DeNiro.Gary Oldman Oldman is definitely majorly influential, but Denzel is pretty much the main influence in the acting choices and habits of an entire race of actors. It's really hard to top the scale of Denzel's influence over actors. You'd be hard pressed to find a black actor (from any country) in the last 25 years who isn't directly influenced by him. I'd even go as far as to say Denzel is mostly responsible for the proliferation of Black British actors in Hollywood today. He's their template to crossing the pond and aiming for movie stardom, not a white Brit like Oldman. Daniel Kaluuya, Idris Elba, David Oyelowo, Damson Idris, John Boyega, Chiwitel Ejiofor etc. They've all studied his voice, his delivery, his mannerisms, his style, his swag and injected it into their own bids to become leading men. And for the most part, it's worked. That's not even mentioning his commanding influence over African-American actors. Even actors who more or less were leading men in the same era when he started being a major leading man, like Will Smith have admitted to being influenced by him as an actor. Jamie Foxx, Chadwick Boseman, Michael B Jordan, Corey Hawkins, Jonathan Majors, Anthony Mackie, Lakeith Stanfield, Mahershala Ali , Sterling K Brown. and many, many more. He's "the guy" to all of them. They've all singled him out . Then you add the proliferation of non-black or white actors who have cited Denzel as a primary influence over the years... Benico Del Toro, Edward Norton, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Eric Bana, Austin Butler, Glen Powell, Timothee Chalamet, Ethan Hawke, Casey Affleck, Jared Leto, Aaron Eckhart, Jake Gyllenhaal and many more. This is also ignoring actresses, whom he has influenced as well. Who can really top that level of influence over actors since DeNiro? To my mind, no one. Oldman would basically need to be the primary influence for the entire white race of actors, to compete with Denzel's hold. I wouldn't say he is. I think he shares that influence with several actors, Denzel among them. Now a lot of actors of all races have been influenced or inspired by Oldman, but Denzel covers too many bases, imho. He's got blacks, whites, young, old, American, non-American etc. I don't think even Daniel Day-Lewis, for all the reverence he's held in, matches Denzel's sphere of influence. The two legends together, promoting The Book Of Eli;

Interesting. Looks like Powell and Sydney Sweeney are going to become a recurring Rom-com partnership ( not surprising, considering Anyone But You just crossed 200 million dollars worldwide. Who the hell saw that coming) in the vein of Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan. These two are really going for the brass ring.
Quite refreshing to see younger stars get breakouts like this and run with it, when we so often read doom and gloom editorial pieces about the "death of the movie star". This is how real movie stars get started, and Powell and Sweeney clearly understand the assignment.

I thought recently that if they did another one within the next couple years it could have a blockbuster type opening with how much money it made and how well it's doing on streaming. In old Hollywood the studios had contract stars so they could put them in 8 or 9 movies in rapid succession if people liked them together which is obviously harder to do today with actors schedules which is part of the reason for the slow death of the rom com.
