Which 2023 films do you think had the best casting and the best ensemble performance? Choose a separate film for each distinction. I'm curious what to expect from the new Casting Oscar and how it might differ from more typical Ensemble awards.
My choices:
Ensemble Performance: Poor Things Casting: Barbie

I mean with the casting, you'd need a list of cast members specifically cast by the casting director to base it on.

Afterall the academy does get additional materials to judge other categories at the nomination stage at least. I don't think so, I mean you don't see directors or editors coming out and going, "Oh I edited their performance so well, that's why they were good" or parsing out every little detail for credit. That's why Oscar speeches, often are filled with thank you's which denote the group effort aspect of the process of filmmaking.

I usually just group casting and ensemble together. I suppose if I had to separate them, I'd mostly go off the distinction of focusing casting on smaller parts or "discoveries."
Ensemble: Oppenheimer Casting: Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.

Ensemble: All of Us Strangers Casting: Past Lives
Ultimately I decided that "best casting" should be more about discovering fresh talent or inspired casting choices. I seriously doubt that the casting director of Barbie, Oppenheimer, Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon etc. etc. etc. had any say in casting the key parts. I mean does anyone seriously think any actress other than Margot Robbie was gonna be cast as Barbie in a film called Barbie produced by Margot Robbie?

Fuck if I know what I'm supposed to do with the "Casting" part of this (especially since I'm forced to pick different movies! ) but I'll try! Ensemble: Oppenheimer Casting: Killers of the Flower Moon (for finding all those Native American actors and the colorful bit players)

Best Ensemble: The Holdovers Best Casting: The Killer of the Flower Moons. And not it's not "most" casting. It's like nearly little bit part and supporting role is aced by a new/fresh face or a little known actor. Cleary no stunt/directorial casting there except Leo and DeNiro.
