--- NOTE --- This poll is about the nominating stage, as in: what would the BP lineup look like under the old 5-movie system. Just to avoid confusion.
The 2021 results are in and you can see them above. The movie that caused the most doubts was our eventual BP winner CODA. The one that got closest to breaking into the top five was Don't Look Up.
And now for 2020.

So this is a fun one to think about, because honestly, all of these films have a theoretical claim to being a top five contender.
Assuming the COVID extension still applies:

So I'm thinking:
- Mank - Minari - Nomadland - Promising Young Woman - The Trial of the Chicago 7
The Father makes the most compelling case for being the runner-up but I don't quite see how it breaks into the five I've got.

Considering how Trial blanked entirely and Mank lost momentum as the season wore on, I think it breaks through on passion and replaces one of those two (probably Trial moreso than Mank). In fact, I feel if it had gotten an earlier release, Zeller gets in for Director.

In fact, I feel if it had gotten an earlier release, Zeller gets in for Director. Well, yes, Trial ended up losing everything and Mank was always more of a "respected but not necessarily loved" kind of thing but I think both would've still been part of the older 5-movie lineup (those blanked all the time too). I can't really imagine Mank as a lone BD nominee with 8 (!) other nominations, and Trial just seems like bait that would've definitely been among the five even if there wasn't enough love to actually reward it. The fact that it managed to get into the BAFTA BP lineup with only two other nominations is pretty telling to me. I see The Father being a "How the hell did it miss BP?" case under this scenario (what I love about this poll is that it's like an extension of my Oscar Speculation thread ).
