According to MAR, the movies above were the 2023 BP Top 5. The one that caused the most doubts (according to the number of votes) was Killers of the Flower Moon. The one that got close to breaking into the five was Anatomy of a Fall.
And now let's see about 2022.

Here's what I'm thinking:
- The Banshees of Inisherin - Everything Everywhere All at Once - The Fabelmans - Tár
And then it gets complicated.
The first instinct is to go with All Quiet but I think it actually might've been Elvis. When we're assessing this top 5 question, it's important to remember that we're mainly talking about the nominations stage, and it seems to me that Elvis's position during that time was pretty damn solid. Yes, All Quiet clearly had tremendous British support with its billion BAFTA nominations but Elvis also got a BP nod from them which in some ways feels like a more significant thing here to me. Elvis was a big success and did very well throughout the season so I think it may have had a bit of a headstart against All Quiet which surged a touch later. All Quiet reminds me of Fanny & Alexander in that regard: gets a very nice amount of nominations, later even winning a bunch of stuff, but misses BP in favor of a popular English-language competitor.

Just to clarify, this poll isn't about the 5 we prefer - it's about speculating which 5 movies got the most votes and would've been the 5 BP nominees if the field wasn't expanded.

Question for the future polls: Does this mean top five during the nominating phase or the final top five? I think you could argue that CODA wasn’t top five initially in 2021.

I think you could argue that CODA wasn’t top five initially in 2021. As in during the nominating phase. You could argue that it was Belfast, Dune, King Richard, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story. Maybe Licorice Pizza and Don’t Look Up too. I didn’t realise that it got a Best Film nomination by the Globes so I might be talking through my ass.

DanQuixote - I understood what you meant! If you ask me, the Top 5 was definitely: Belfast CODA Dune The Power of the Dog West Side Story But we can discuss on the next poll.

As in, what would the BP lineup look like under the previous 5-movie system (which could only be during the nominating phase). Your question got me thinking so much that I even changed the poll title! And I absolutely agree about CODA. But yeah, this is a story for tomorrow
