Don't care for it. Some cool cinematography but I found it devoid of interest. I don't even understand what it's trying to do.

Rates down to a 6 .......rollicking and quotable until it becomes strident and repetetive ........one of those works of Art that removes you from the world rather than asks you to understand it........those can work at times........but usually not......and not here

I saw Henry Fool btw... reminded a lot of this one, and it's kind of a deeper film.

I love Henry Fool - what's next? Amateur? She's a nymphomaniac virgin yanno? She's choosy Happens more often maybe in nihilistic literature or music subgenres .......the album Where You Been? by Dinosaur Jr. is definitely one of those imo........in film a lot of Von Trier's work......the early work of Gaspar Noe........though the LvT and early Noe don't work One that does is Sue (1997) - on TUBI - I've talked about it before - it's not great but the performance is........I don't think anybody has watched it on my rec though because they were rewatching Nope and shit

Entertaining, and if there really isn't much flesh on the bones after the initial fun of watching it, so what?

One of those movies that became a huge cultural phenomenon upon release and has seemed to gradually decrease in appreciation over the years. I think it gets pigeonholed a bit too much as being nothing more than its twist. That's reductive and shows an unwillingness on the part of the viewer to see more than what's on the surface. I don't think it loses any luster once you know how it ends. It's still a fun watch with great performances and further showcases Fincher's directorial abilities.

10.
An incredibly effective dissection of the appeal and inherent rot within straw nihilism and the draw for dissatisfied young men to follow masculine figures who can diagnose the problems even if they prescribe terrible solutions. It is essentially a look into 21st century social media when those feelings were just bubbling under the surface in 1999. I also think it's Fincher's funniest movie and one of his most stylistically interesting. Some of the best work by its main acting trio, an all-time great closing needle drop, a seminal movie both in its own filmmaking qualities and as a classic "if you idolize the main character you missed the point" movie.

It's not as appealing as it once was for me (used to be in my all-time top ten) but I still think it's a darkly funny look into what would happen if one dude releases his contagious madness into the whole society; featuring three great performances. 8/10.

I'm surprised tbh. Hope it scores higher than at least two Lanthimoses.
