Any explanations for her fall from prominence?
She racked up 3 Oscar nominations in a relatively short space of time in the 90's and early 2000's ( for Nixon, The Crucible and The Contender), then barely sniffed another Oscar nomination after that. And she easily could have had more nominations in that run ( The Ice Storm, Pleasantville etc)
She was going toe to toe with Anthony Hopkins, Daniel Day-Lewis, Gary Oldman and Jeff Bridges, and looked every inch their equal.
No American actress becomes Streep in terms of Oscar love, but you'd kind of expect ssomeone like her to go on to have a similar run to Annette Benning, where she's occasionally welcomed back with an Oscar nod for a performance in some baity indie movie. But she's completely fell off the Academy's radar after 2000 and isn't talked about any longer. I know she's done TV more recently ( like Lisey's Story with Julianne Moore).....but it'd be good to see her make a run at the Oscars again. I could easily see her in something like Nyad.
Great actress.

Ultimately, she fell into the same trap 99% of actresses do: she aged out of baity roles in an industry that is unfavourable to women of a certain age.
That said, she was brilliant in Room and should've been nominated for it.

Stephen hit the nail on the head. She also apparently falls into the "not into fame" type actor, so imagine there might be a bit of a "Why bother" dealing with the other elements of Hollywood, particularly if the roles being offered aren't good.

Yeah, good answers unfortunately.
One of my favorite Allen characters/performances isn't one of her more award friendly parts, but she really felt essential to the success of the Bourne movies, with her role as Pamela Landy, essentially that franchises' M.

Fine actress......Hollywood goes through them pretty quick tbh - Jane Alexander, Laura Linney etc.......2 other actresses of similar acclaim and who loved the stage and who everybody misses from movies but .....

Laura Linney hasn't fallen from prominence though. She's still a fairly big name and was getting nominated for Emmys almost every year recently in one of the most highly regarded prestige television shows of recent years, Ozark. I could easily see her getting Oscar nodded again (or even winning), but Ozark kept her pretty occupied the last few years. But the profile is still there for Linney.
Joan Allen by comparison, just feels completely forgotten. It's not like she even had a successful prestige TV show to keep her profile high ( Lisey's Room was not successful).

I wouldn't put Laura Linney in the same group as Joan Allen and Jane Alexander. She's not as demand in film, but she's still doing a lot of work in tv and theater and were up for accolades very recently. She was just up for an Emmy/Globe/SAG last year and a Tony like 3 years ago. She's also a lot younger so it's kind of apples and oranges. More comparable examples would be Holly Hunter, Sissy Spacek, and Sigourney Weaver. They work very infrequently these days. Actually work is drying up even for Meryl Streep. The only old actress (aka >65) whose career is showing no sign of slowing down that I can think of is Helen Mirren. It's iconic how she's managed to stay so busy at 78.

I saw Linney on Broadway 3 years ago - and she has 5 Tony nods iirc ........I'm a fan but she is 60 now and Spacek is one of the greatest US film actresses of all-time and Linney (or Allen) isn't close to that level imo ..........but I get what you're saying in that Linney's active.......I'm not really sure what awaits Linney in the future tbh ......I'd be surprised (though happy) if she emerges in movies a bit actually

I thought she should’ve been nominated for The Upside of Anger. She was amazing in that film. I’m hoping she can land a prestige tv show at least if not more prominent film roles. It’s a shame Hollywood forgot about her. Amazing actress.

It’s a shame Hollywood forgot about her. Amazing actress. Well, Allen is going to be in all six episodes of Zero Day, a mini-series for Netflix which has an incredible cast. Robert DeNiro ( hopefully not on autopilot coming off Scorsese again), Angela Bassett, Jesse Plemons, Dan Stevens, Connie Britton, Lizzy Caplan, Matthew Modine. Sounds like pretty prestigious TV to me.

I can't think of an American actress I like more than Joan Allen.
Ok Jessica Lange. Michelle Pfeiffer. Find me another one better.
