So that we can get the moment of pedantry out of the way. I say it's 1983 because that's where it was placed forever, before they somehow found out it was released in Iceland in December of '82.
But let's say it's 1983. I say it's Top 5 behind Sans Soleil, The Gold Diggers, Scarface, and The Dead Zone. So behind a Marker, Potter, DePalma, and Cronenberg only.
It's one of the under sung DeNiro performances. I'd take him here over some of his more beloved stuff like Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, and The Irishman. He's basically now associated in my mind as the creepy celeb stalker..... he was also in The Fan, which he again played a creepy celeb stalker.

Not sure where I'd rank it but in general it was a movie and a performance that were doomed by their era: there were 3 performances that year that would have been slam dunk nominees or much bigger awards deals at least - just a few years earlier: DePac and Eric Roberts in Star 80.....in 1983 their 70s scuzziness was out of fashion, out of awards and hard to even assess in the moment .........and so were their movies.......but they all hold up spectacularly.....it's in his big 6 from 73-83 - and those Big 6 can be argued as THE best 6 performances ever in their totality (again, aguable).......people who make the case for him as the GOAT do it imo ON those 6 - to a large extent (Mean Streets, GF 2, Taxi Driver, Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, KoC). Like I always say.......for males anyway - it's never about the nominations you get ........it's always about the ones you miss........which someone should tell the DiCap fans on MAR - and other assorted fanboys btw - who think anyone is gettng 14 nods and shit ..........so they don't take it so hard when they don't......... when that's harder to do than they think it is.......

I have it on '82 cause LETTERBOXD SAYS SO lol; and at #5 behind Blade Runner, E.T., Fitzcarraldo and The Thing.
Would be #4 in '83 behind Nostalghia, Videodrome and Angst.

It's my #1!
Even though I'm from Iceland I consider it a 1983. If I'd consider it a 1982 film (which I don't), it would be somewhere in the top 5.

It's in my 1982 top 10 (#7). It'd be in the 1983 top 10 too.
Although I wouldn't call De Niro's performance undersung. I think it's pretty sung at this point, tons of people consider it one of his best. Which it, of course, is.

I have it as #3 in 1982, behind Fitzcarraldo and The Thing. If I put in '83, it would probably still be #3, behind Angst and Danton
