2 guys who are often good............not often particularly great (imo) - but the board seems to like them a lot, so why not.........if I voted in my own polls I'd vote for ............ for Javier Bardem..........but hey that's just me...... Damon is a decade older but I think they are similar in that each can play a lot of roles well but not particularly vividly / distinctively for my tastes ........both stil missing the Big Orgasm Oscar ........both may win it someday.....you would think...... if you think Damon is better now.........will Gyllenhaal eventually catch him? Who's the better actor?

Damon, easily. Gyllenhaal's career has been a crushing disappointment.

Damon has a higher number of quality movies, since he's older (wonder if we could say that about YOU, ahah ) ... but I prefer my favorite Jake performance/moments to my Damon ones. I do sit through an Ambulance twice because of JG but can't say the same about General Groves.

Damon's not come anywhere close to what Gyllenhaal did in Nightcrawler, but his filmography utterly obliterates Gyllenhaal's.

Gyllenhaal. Damon’s screen presence is some of the most uninteresting and even annoying in the business. And BBM >>>>>>>>>>> everything Damon has done in his much longer career.
In terms of who I would prefer as a neighbour then I guess Matt Damon. He is allegedly well-liked by people. Gyllenhaal on the other hand is a complete asshole according to blind items.

Damon. Gyllenhaal is at times a great actor (Nightcrawler, Love and Other Drugs, etc.), but his peaks aren't higher than Damon's, and his career has fallen off a cliff.

Gyllenhaal on the other hand is a complete asshole according to blind items.A funny article this week depending who you believe: Last week, the French film website Technikart published a harrowing account of a production involving Jake Gyllenhaal, Vanessa Kirby, and a Pepe Le Pew impression. Told mostly from the perspective of director Thomas Bidegain, known for A Prophet, it recounts Gyllenhaal’s erratic behavior on set, which, depending on who translated the article, means he wanted to write a scene where his character slaps a fish or forced set builders to sleep in their cars out of COVID precautions. Over four days, the director, who reportedly worked with Gyllenhaal and Kirby for 10 months on the script, decided it wasn’t worth the headache and shut the project down.

First thing that came to mind was Nightcrawler. That tells me that as much as I adore Damon, nothing of his work is memorable enough to stand out whereas this Jake performance jumped right to the front. And yes Ambulance too. Now let's get down to what's really on my mind: I would pay to see them recreate the naked wrestling scene from A Woman In Love. Mind you, they don't have that masculine allure that Bates and Reed had but they fit right in my wheelhouse and will probably stay there as they age handsomely. And one more thing - Oliver Reed's seductive, bedroom eyes Calgon take me away.

IDK, Damon's usually not that interesting but he has a much better filmography. Gyllenhaal is the more capable and varied actor but he's always elevating projects so beneath his level of talent it's getting tiring. Nominated for a Tony, nominated for an Oscar almost 20 years ago, and the guy who did Nightcrawler 10 years ago, and his career over the past decade with like 2 exceptions has been genre movies (and mostly not good ones). but he is partly responsible for one of Taylor Swift's best songs so I'll give him that. One of the best things he's been involved with in a long time

I'd take Damon for his '90s alone over all of Gyl.... so it's an easy pick for me. Gyllenhaal rarely carries a movie, he can come off dazed or distracted, and he's often one-upped by costars or feels small at the center of bigger films (Brokeback, Zodiac, Brothers, The Covenant, etc). Of course the exception is his career best Nightcrawler.... shoutout to his kamikaze fun in Ambulance, and the surprising soft touch of his Sisters Brothers perf. Damon is a movie star with an ongoing almost sportive specialty in doing cameos. It's hard to describe but I love the way he can suggest a life of the character before and after the scene we see him. I'll admit I rank a lot of his generation over him, but what happened... everybody is starting to take him for granted. Stillwater, Last Duel, Oppenheimer are really good perfs and they're entirely disregarded. The Informant, Candelabra etc... Wasn't much praise. What does he have to do, buy another zoo?

Didn't vote as both are so different. Matt Damon is one of those actors I hugely admire and actively follow their careers. Gyllenhaal on the other hand has wowed me more with his acting highs on more than one occasion.
