Considering the recent conversations on this board about actors of a certain generation avoiding stage, it wouis be amazing if Leonardo DiCaprio could lose his stage virginity as Iago opposite Denzel's Othello. It'll never happen, but what a fucking event that would be!

 So he’s potentially doing Othello and King Lear (we all know he wants to tackle Lear at some point) on Broadway after doing MacBeth on film. Dude isn’t taking it easy as he heads into his 70s. Who would you rather see as Iago between Driver or Gyllenhall? Or perhaps someone else if their schedules don’t work?

Who would you rather see as Iago between Driver or Gyllenhall? Or perhaps someone else if their schedules don’t work? I don't have a preference between Gyllenhaal and Driver as Iago. I prefer Jake as a film actor, even though auteurs can't seem to stop casting Driver. But both would help up the stakes as an event production and both know how to act on stage. I might lean slightly towards Gyllenhaal, because I know Denzel is his idol and the reason he became an actor in the first place. |

Some potential awards thoughts because that's my thing  * I talk a lot about "acting records" - the " oldest male acting record" I am pretty sure is Freddy Saints Go Marching In March who is afaik - the only man with multiple Oscars and multiple Tonys - Helen Hayes is the only woman iirc. * I don't include this one ^ - and it has lasted far, far longer the 3 modern ones - (70 years) I am always talking endlessly about (DDL's 3 Oscar wins, Nicholson's 12 Oscar nods, Pacino's 5 Triple Crown wins) is because March's 1st Tony win was a one vote tie so it is a little odd BUT ......... if Washington were to win a 2nd Tony that would be a huge deal - more even imo than an American male getting Oscar nodded for a Shakepeare film which was a big deal and Washington achieved by matching Brando
* I do not believe (?) any American male has ever won a Lead Tony for Playing anything in Shakespeare - afaik there are 3 American men nodded for BA for it ........ Tom Hanks has expressed interest in playing Iago before (not specifically for this production, but just in a previous interview while promoting a project).
I was just talking about how Denzel's Othello facing off against Philip Seymour Hoffman's Iago is a missed opportunity as a theatrical event for American theatre, but Hanks is an intriguing choice. It would certainly be a momentous event, and Hanks can do stage , but would he be miscast? Would he have the requisite darkness to play Iago? These are the questions.

It was just intriguing to talk about, since Hanks himself mentioned it. But yeah, he's got way too many dramatic limitations for it to be a good idea. Desdemona could easily be a veteran theatre actress that hasn't got a huge profile. You gotta remember, these theatre productions are trying to make money. Denzel will get a big chunk of the pie because he's a star. If they cast a star like Gyllenhaal or Driver as Iago, they will also get a percentage of the proceeds. Casting a huge star actress as Desdemona would mean she gets a cut too, and the producers may end up with nothing. I think you can pay for two big stars for a production like this, but three might be bad Broadway economics. When Denzel did Julius Caesar As Brutus on Broadway , Jessica Hecht (an experienced stage actress, but not a big film name) played his wife Portia. I suspect the Desdemona casting might lean more in that direction. Could be a nice breakout for a great stage actress without a huge film profile |

I'm gonna throw my curveball here: Kathryn Hunter as Iago. She's known for gender-bending Shakespearean roles to massive success (though she's never played Iago, although she directed a production of the play in 2009 for the RSC), she's worked with Denzel before, and she's a huge talent.

I'm happy it's Gyllenhaal over Driver. Jake's a great, brilliant actor, but I think he's been disillusioned by the arthouse/prestige movie scene with some disappointments. But this is a real indication that his ambition as an actor remains. Plus, he gets to act with his idol, and you never know, might even be able to outshine Denzel. Spicy that Denzel is willing to do this with another star actor, who could steal the limelight. |

As I mentioned earlier, it won't make sense for producers to pay big bucks for a third big star, when this is pretty much a guaranteed sell-out run anyway. Unless there's some big female star that wants to take a pay cut just to be in this production, which isn't impossible.
Tough to guess this one. Might be someone known, but not an A-list movie star...like Sophie Okenedo in A Raisin In The Sun.

Yep, and looking at Denzel’s Broadway trend, he tends to return every 4-5 years (it’s been 6 years since The Iceman Cometh but I wonder if the pandemic pushed this back a bit). Okay....when it comes to casting Desdemona...lemme Quarterback this thing An option so perfect, too good to be true, that they'll probably never even think of it. Kelly Reilly.Had fantastic chemistry with Denzel in Flight. Has since gone on to become a pretty iconic TV star in the America thanks to the huge success of Yellowstone.Here's the kicker....Reilly has already played Desdemona to award worthy effect. She was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2008 for a West End staging of Othello, that starred Chiwitel Ejiofor, Tom Hiddleston and Ewan McGregor.
She knows the role and has already nailed it. And she's already worked with D. If I was producing this thing and found out that Kelly had already played Desdemona to a high level, she'd be the one I'd try to get.
