The idea of this poll is to take the BP winner of each year and reimagine them with the best director nominees of that year, and ask which director would make the best version of that film. If the BP winner was nominated in directing, that option will not be listed.
So our choices for Spotlight are...
Lenny Abrahamson Alejandro G. Iñárritu Adam McKay George Miller
Previous winners: 2022: Ruben Östlund's Everything Everywhere All at Once 2021: Ryusuke Hamaguchi's CODA 2020: Lee Isaac Chung's Nomadland 2019: Martin Scorsese's Parasite 2018: Spike Lee's Green Book 2017: Jordan Peele's The Shape of Water 2016: Kenneth Lonergan's Moonlight

Abrahamson and Miller would both be as dry as McCarthy, so they're out. McKay would be... something. I think his anger may actually work for the story being told. Inarritu would have some good ideas but would also be up his own ass and doing too many fancy things, taking away from the story. I'll have to think about this one.

McKay version: "It's time Robbie" Turns to audience "it's time guys, call this number on the screen right now" "Just kidding, this story happened decades ago stupid" "But yes this is a very serious issue".
Abrahamson version: Same as McCarthy's, maybe slightly less "clean".
Miller: Well based on Lorenzo's Oil, surprisingly similar to McCarthy's but with a couple of brief random moments of, potentially, ill-fitting style.
Inarritu: Would bring the most style, but could very easily over do it, particularly given the nature of the story.

Absolutely not McKay.

I would like to see Spotlight done in the style of The Revenant or Fury Road. Tough to determine which I would want to see more...
John Slattery: Ah! Mediocre!

Spotlight needs a no-nonsense somber approach that was perfect for McCarthy. Everyone else in this list barring Abrahamson would be a disaster.

Room tackled a difficult, sensitive subject matter quite organically and brilliantly imo, so I chose Lenny.
