I've been wondering what's going on with him. He's not the world's greatest thespian or anything, but he has undoubted screen presence, charisma and is a physical specimen. In other words, a natural movie star.
The success of Aquaman in 2018 ( the only DCEU movie to gross A billion dollars at the worldwide box office) should have cemented him as an A-lister in the vein of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Or laid the groundwork to become another Arnold Schwarzenegger.
But outside of the DC films with his Aquaman character ( with the possible exception of Fast X and a smaller role in Dune) he keeps doing streaming movies or streaming shows that leave almost no residual cultural footprint. After Aquaman, he was the lead in some Netflix movie called Sweet Girl. He was also the lead in an Apple + dystopian sci-fi show for 24 episodes called See. Then he made another Netflix film called Slumberland. I've not heard of any of these movies or shows.
It feels like a bit of mismanagement by his team, because l do believe he has potential to be a much bigger star than he is. But they keep taking the easy money and putting him in these streaming projects which are instantly forgotten about. Like why hasn't he been front and centre as the star of a big cinems released action movie that isn't Aquaman or an ensemble thing like Fast X? Cement him as a true box office draw.

This could be interesting. With Julian Schnabel directing it's probably more of an indie thriller. And Butler and Isaac are leading men in their own right, so it won't really be a test of Momoa's starpower. Apparently Al Pacino, John Malkovich and Gal Gadot are also in this.

Just a little irl story about Momoa because he did something that I'm a huge fan of that I think should be noted and recognized - no real thoughts on his acting career - but In The Hand of Dante sounds bonkers - Scorsese is acting in it too and there's a whole lot of world cinema actors too - a large Italian cast also. There's a thread here : movie-awards-redux.freeforums.net/post/475650/thread* Momoa is a huge fan of my favorite current American Rock band - The Bobby Lees - who made an album I consider a modern American Punk Rock classic Bellevue (my #3 album of 2022) - and gave a jaw-dropping concert performance I attended in 2023 that just floored me - and that I raved in the Last Concert You Attended thread. The Bobby Lees are on hiatus and possibly broken up - I wrote an entire thread about "why" - called "Stealing Art" about people "NOT paying for music" etc movie-awards-redux.freeforums.net/post/474443......... BUT Momoa is very supportive of the band and helped them out in a lot of ways ......they are a very small band and his support has meant a lot to the bands singer, the actress Sam Quartin (from Candy Land (2022/2023) - who is a genuine fucking Rock star imo........ when this board could give af about Rock and Roll tbh . Not a lot of people know this band - not enough anyway - or know how cool Momoa has been for them no other reason than he just appreciates their Art - here he is introducing them at one of their last (?) shows possibly ever (?) in November, in Woodstock, New York ( Brother Fease this is their hometown I think - are you close to Woodstock - ?).

Interesting. Guess he doesn't think Dune counts.

They should’ve capitalized on Mamoa years ago when he had that heat from Season 1 of Game of Thrones. I wonder if his team puts him in these streaming projects because it’s deemed “safe” and won’t have the stain of being a box office disappointment or flop if he’s front and center in a big budget project released in theaters? I didn’t see Fast X, I quit the series after Fast 7 but apparently he stole the show there. Hopefully if he gets the offer to a big studio action film as the lead, he takes it if it’s up to snuff. Feel there is still time for him to make his mark as a movie star, especially in the action genre.

He should be able to maintain a very success career as a genre actor, he should lean into comedy, he was hilarious in the last Fast and Furious movie. Think he can also be decent with the right Director/script. Liked him in Bad Batch.

I think that's exactly why they put him in these streaming projects and it's a shame, because they should have shown more faith in his potential to be a major box office draw after Aquaman. To me it's crazy that they never got him in a big action vehicle made for cinemas and built around him after Aquaman. I think a major action franchise could have been built around Momoa. Something in the John Wick vein. Like you said, I don't think it's too late for him to make his mark as a movie star.

He’s in his 40s so there is still time, but he needs to get a move on it pretty soon since he’s probably done as Aquaman.
