The idea of this poll is to take the BP winner of each year and reimagine them with the best director nominees of that year, and ask which director would make the best version of that film. If the BP winner was nominated in directing, that option will not be listed.
So our choices for The Shape of Water are...
Paul Thomas Anderson Greta Gerwig Christopher Nolan Jordan Peele
Previous winners: 2022: Ruben Östlund's Everything Everywhere All at Once 2021: Ryusuke Hamaguchi's CODA 2020: Lee Isaac Chung's Nomadland 2019: Martin Scorsese's Parasite 2018: Spike Lee's Green Book

Not a huge PTA fan, but his DDL collabs are quite good... and this kind of strange, out-there film would work towards his strengths. Similar deal with Peele, but I think he'd be too preachy and wouldn't make this quite funny enough. Gerwig would make a shitty feminist manifesto and Nolan wouldn't care about... you know, characters. So I'm going with PTA here.

I haven't seen The Shape of Water yet; (based on the synopsis) my mind says Gerwig but my heart says PTA... with Joaquin as the fish guy.

Given his horror pedigree and the obvious racial themes of the era, Jordan Peele probably makes the most sense here.

Write in #1- No one directs the movie
Write in #2- Weerasethakul since he has at least has the demonstrated ability to make a good movie where a woman has sex with a fish
From these choices PTA because I'd like to see DDL play a fish.

Jordan Peele is such a good-fitting consensus for this one. I missed the poll but I would have chosen PTA because of that frog thing I know he added to Magnolia. I would be very curious to see what he did with a supernatural romance like this.
