7. I don't think either lead remotely captures the heart and soul of the title, good as she is (he sucks) the movie is very well made and was easy to watch if you ignore that pretty important aspect of it, but it came way too soon after the definitive adaptation and sits snugly in its shadow.

Misses the spirit of the original novel, but it's such a good formula romance that I can't complain

Thank you, Nikan ! It's a 9 for me. I'll admit that it pales in comparison to the 1995 miniseries, but this film is what introduced me and my generation to Jane Austen, and it certainly is (to my mind) the definitive theatrical adaptation. And oh, what a beautiful film it is - totally swoon-worthy. I love Keira Knightley's performance and I'm so glad she was nominated for the Oscar.

I'll abstain (saw it once; decades ago) but it's not above a 5-6 territory for me. It's Darcy really had no presence (you could have him the center of a close-shot and I'd still miss him) and Knightley doesn't come up as strong as a Ronan or even a young HBC.
It's 4.0 on Letterboxd baffles me as it is higher than Dangerous Liaisons and The Age of Innocence; far more exciting movies - directing and acting-wise... If anything I should be mad at it for spoiling that "definitve adaptation" for me, or the source material.

Good as a Hollywoodized version, but not as good as the 95 miniseries or of course the novel.

rounding up to a 9/10. Love it. One of the best Austen adaptations by far, second only to the 90s A&E miniseries and Ang Lee's Sense & Sensibility. Wright & Moggach retain the beauty of Austen's language while modernizing the story with heightened eroticism and female gaze, allowing Knightley's Lizzie to be more earthy and messy. More is always better with Austen so I can never prefer this the 90s version, but Moggach's adaptation effectively condenses the material down to feature length by focusing on the sexually-charged anticipation between Lizzie & Darcy. For a PG movie, this thing is HOT and the sun-drenched natural landscapes captured by DP Roman Osin are to die for.

Maybe a 6. It's pretty slight to be honest. Will it be down to a 5 in 9 more hours?

Couldn't stand MacFayden's overly depressed Darcy after having rewatched Firth & Ehle's supreme two-hander series just a year before. So... I couldn't even finish this movie...
