8.5. Gorgeous film elevated by some devastating performances (namely Ronan and Redgrave).

6. Joe Wright faps and fap and faps as hard as he can, and the cast are giving it their all, but without the writing/time to do the story justice, it cannot help but come up short.

9.I've never been able to get certain scenes out of my head and I'm forever obsessed with Keira's green dress.

4. Ronan's excellent but the rest of the film feels self-indulgent to the point of being (as ibbi so eloquently put it) masturbatory, and I find myself annoyed with it more than enraptured.

8It pales in comparison to its predecessor, The Go-Between (which I hope more of you will check out since its score was recently re-worked for May December!), and the Dunkirk scene nearly took me out of the narrative if I'm being honest, but there's no denying its bold visual dazzle. It's simply stunning. Oh, and perfectly acted. Edit: Nikan , would you consider adding Wright's Pride & Prejudice to your line-up of poll questions? I'm curious to see how this board feels about it.

Been ages but a soft 7 for me at least. It's memorable, can't deny it... The use of "Masturbatory" could generate a conversation though. When is it that and when is it a ViSioN that should be applauded, for you ibbi stephen ? is it trully worse than let's say Malick's 2012-2017 run or Luhrman's Elvis.. or is it all subjective?

I think the Dunkirk shot is the perfect case in point here. It doesn't feel a piece with the rest of the film and feels very showboat-y in a way that takes me immediately out of the movie (even though yes, it is an undeniable feat of blocking). At least Malick and Luhrmann's projects earn their indulgences by being consistent all the way through.

7.
Some bravura moments, but doesn't all come together for me. Never bad, though.

Basing off of Stephen's comment, yeah the movie does feel like three different movies thrown together; the early romance; the war; and the revelation. So it is 3 distinct acts that don't necessarly assemble that well. I was surprised by liking it less than expected based on all the hype. Still, solid 7.5 for me.
