Saw Germany's entry for best foreign language film tonight. Leonie Benesch is clearly a terrific actress, in total command of how she uses her eyes and body language here. A movie about petty theft at a middle school has no business being so tense. Gets better and better as it goes along and very subtly funny. A semi documentary visual style without going full Paul Greengrass. Very good score and sound design which adds to the tension. Just about everything about it works.
It's a bit of a jumble thematically, though. I kept expecting it to reach some kind of thematic conclusion or thesis and it doesn't. It's one of those movies that "stops" instead of having a real ending. Someone online suggested it was using the teacher's as a metaphor for how institutions try to control society and end up creating more chaos which would be an interesting way to read the movie. Might be worth a second watch just to see that.
In my top ten for the year and the best foreign language film I've seen. Benesch 100% deserves a nod and is a close second to Portman in my actress lineup this year. Wouldn't hold my breath on her getting one though, if I was a Hollywood big shot I'd write one of those open letters for her.

Would love to see her get a break in Hollywood like Vicky Krieps

Benesch is terrific. The film is gripping and intense in the first hour or so, but it falls flat as it goes on imo.

Benesch is excellent, the film is mostly fairly gripping but yeah, it's too open-ended for its own good.
