Strong batch of winners
It's funny since most of these films were predictions but just for different prizes
Coppola's director win is somewhat surprising since she wasn't at the ceremony

A great push for Joaquin Phoenix. Will add him to my predictions now. Nicole will also have a killer year. It's gonna be an uphill climb for Phoenix to get a nomination. Amazon Studios is still an unproven quantity as far as campaigning goes, it's an incredibly bleak film, and Phoenix doesn't give a shit about campaigning. He would have to be a critical darling and a lot of presupposed frontrunners would have to underwhelm, I think.

Yeah, I'd say that sounds like a Palme D'Or winner.
And Yes! Sofia!

It's funny since most of these films were predictions but just for different prizes If you didn't predict the movie for the right prize, your prediction is wrong. Why is it surprising that the most talked and well reviewed films got the prizes? So, for final predictions I'm going with something like PALME: 120 BPM (alt: Loveless) JURY: Loveless (alt: The Beguiled) PRIX: Okja (alt: L'Amount Double) DIRECTOR: Ramsay, You Were Never Really Here (alt: Safdies, Good Time) ACTOR: Pattinson, Good Time (alt: Garrel, Redoubtable) ACTRESS: Kruger, In the Fade (alt: Kidman, Beguiled or Sacred Deer) SCREENPLAY: The Square (alt: Happy End) You only got Kruger.

It's funny since most of these films were predictions but just for different prizes If you didn't predict the movie for the right prize, your prediction is wrong. Why is it surprising that the most talked and well reviewed films got the prizes? Because Cannes awards are notoriously unpredictable, given that they're chosen by a very small voting body which renews itself every year (so we have no previous history to go off of like with the Oscars) and which doesn't follow reviews or internet buzz. The most acclaimed titles of last year's lineup (Toni Erdmann, Paterson, Elle, Aquarius, The Handmaiden) all went home empty-handed, while the Palme winner hardly had much buzz, the Grand Prix went to something with downright bad reviews and most people can't even tell you the name of the Best Actress winner. Critical raves and Twitter hype mean little here. And then there's the fact that most of these predictions were made before the films even premiered, so that ALL of the winners were on most people's radars to varying degrees before the festival had even opened makes them pretty damn strong, regardless of how they're distributed across the categories. It's a much harder game to predict these awards when each film can only win one prize (or two, in a few isolated cases like the Ramsay) and when you have such a small pool of people choosing them. So you'd ask why we predict them if they're so hard to call, and the answer is: same reason we predict the Oscars in May. For fun.

So, nothing for "Wind River" here?! It wasn't in Main Competition, but it won Best Director at the Un Certain Regard tier.

The only real surprise was best screenplay. Nobody could have predicted that. The rest would have floated through our minds at some stage during the festival.

Its a bleak role indeed but it wouldn't be the first they love by an appreciated actor.
