I have mentioned him before in the film Paar (1984) - his (great) Volpi winning role. I've seen him a bit but would like to dig into him a bit deeper in 2024. Fave performances? Underrated or offbeat ones?

Umrao Jaan (1982) is one of the greatest Indian movies for my money with a great, classic Naseeruddin Shah performance in it. Also you must check out TV series Mirza Ghalib (1988) if you're really into him. I have no idea about his recent filmography.

I haven't seen this - and this is exactly what I was looking for - thank you. I don't know almost any TV work - is that common to have great work on TV like for Shah or other acclaimed Indian actors? I also love poetry so that alone is a plus.......this has a 9.3 on Imdb

I've only seen Monsoon Wedding, which is one of my favorite movies. He's one character among many (although he gets top billing and probably top screentime), playing the father of the bride. Not a *great* performance, but a solid glue keeping some of the other wilder characters in check and giving us a dramatic core.

I'm not sure at all about that film/TV cross over for great Indian actors, now that you ask. That rating would be no suprise, I remember both these titles as having that kind of huge cultural impact from my childhood that we all know few screen productions ever get to crack in any era. Seeing your interest, I would like to bring to your attention the work of Shabana Azmi, argualy the greatest Indian arthouse actor EVER. I'm only familiar with a few of her more commercial performances from way back in my childhood (the 80s). I'm sure IMDB ratings will be a good rough guide in that regard. Also Drish and Pavan may provide great suggestions for both these veterans, especially when it comes to contemporary arthouse cinema in India

My recommendations would be Sparsh (1985) Pestonjee (1988) Aakrosh (1980) Masoom (1983) Paar(1984) Ardh Satya (1983) Om puri is truly great here but still great movie works more as a companion piece to Serpico Mirch Masala (1987) Mirza Galib (Tv series) Jalwa (1987) Beverly Hills Cop remake

I don't have a command on Hindi cinema besides the big ones. I've only seen Shah in A Wednesday(2008) and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara(2011) and in both films he gave good performances. Miles Morales might help.

Such a top-tier, ever so reliable actor. Obviously excellent in dramas but he's pretty great in comedies as well. Some of my recommendations besides the obvious great ones like Masoom, Umrao Jaan, Paar etc.: Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (1983) Iqbal (2005) Parzania (2005) Aakrosh (1980) Ishqiya (2010) Ijaazat (1987) Sparsh (1980) A Wednesday! (2008) Albert Pinto ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai (1980) Sarfarosh (1999) Katha (1983) Maqbool (2004) Khamosh (1985) Hey Ram (2000) Some of these are absolute essentials for introduction to Indian cinema. He's been in more than 200 films so it's kinda hard to recommend without missing so many of his great ones, but yeah, one of the greatest living actors we have. Would love to hear your thoughts on the films you decide to watch. Also, he's been pretty great in some really shitty films as well, so that kinda narrows down the list a lot

Thanks everyone for the recommendations - I have watched Mirza Ghalib (1988) - which was hard to find in a good US translated edition for some reason but is well worth watching........and the performance is at times like the poetic verse too.........very commanding, graceful, passionate, - at times reckless in some personal details - and in a way also eventually tranquil - ........an exceedingly smart performance that often requires you to read into his thoughts and feelings - and knowledge - which is not usually something movies can portray but is really well conveyed and partially the point (not just in the acting either but also in how it is staged /shot / presented) There is a great scene here - several - but one in particular where the narration stops and the camera lingers on his face for several minutes.......extremely rare that happens in movies (especially for men actually for that long - ie not Garbo)
