Merry Christmas to all. Lets talk about the Best Cast or Best Ensemble award. Only 4 films have won Best Picture without a SAG Ensemble nomination. We had Braveheart (1995), The Shape of Water (2017), Green Book (2018), and Nomadland (2020). 3 of the last 4 SAG Ensemble winners have gone on to Best Picture.
PRECURSOR AWARDS Critics Choice Acting Ensemble nominees - Air, Barbie, The Color Purple, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon and Oppenheimer
Major Acting Awards attention - American Fiction (Wright), Anatomy of a Fall (Huller), Maestro (Cooper & Mulligan), May December (Melton & Moore), Nyad (Foster), Past Lives (Lee), Poor Things (Stone & Ruffalo), Rustin (Domingo).
I will throw into the kettle Asteroid City (Large cast), The Iron Claw (family dynamite plot), and Saltburn. That should cover it.
These tend to be a little tricky because SAG tends to make it either about the quality of the film OR the quality of the cast.

- American Fiction - Barbie - Killers of the Flower Moon - Oppenheimer
^feel confident in those. And then... I guess I'll go with The Color Purple.

My logic:
American Fiction - Best Picture contender, family dynamite, black culture theme
Barbie - Best Picture contender, large cast, female empowerment theme Killer of the Flower - Best Picture contender, wonderful performances, native American culture theme Oppenheimer - Do we really need to go there? Its been winning the bulk of the ensemble awards.
Air and The Color Purple were the other top choices. Went with The Color Purple because of its black themes and large ensemble cast. Poor Things and The Holdovers are the others I would consider.
We both loved Maestro, but that's more of a two-hander deal.

I’m saying…
Oppenheimer The Color Purple Killers Barbie American Fiction
The Holdovers and Poor Things both feel like those strong contenders that get 2+ nods that just don’t have big enough casts for here. Both could happen though. Kind of feeling The Holdovers because SAG really likes child actors. Keeping it out though.

Got 5/5 here too. Surprised people weren’t expecting American Fiction. That seemed like a SAG favourite from the jump imo.

You killed it on those lead categories. I was too lazy to do full predictions lol

deadline.com/2024/01/sag-awards-nominations-2024-1235701711/The Oppenheimer cast members list is ridiculous. No Benny Safdie, no Jason Clarke, no David Krumholtz, and no Alden Ehrenreich, but they have cameos like Kenneth Branagh and Rami Malek? What the fuck? Simu Liu also isn't included in the cast of Barbie. Wtf even happened lmao.

That's why bigger names like Oscar winners Malek and Affleck who received a higher billing (=single-card in the end credits) got in instead of actors of a lesser status who had bigger roles.

Which is such an asinine way to do it, really. Only Gladstone and Tantoo Cardinal got the single billing in their films when it comes to the Native actors, but fuckin' Brendan Fraser and John Lithgow still get them? And guys like Ty Mitchell and Jason Isbell don't? If you get any sort of title card at all, be it shared or otherwise, you should be eligible. And honestly, everyone in the film itself should get at least a certificate of some sort.

Yeah I know, and that's totally ludicrous. Esp. with Killers of the Flower Moon.
