Don't forget the best song (and supporting actor) from The Lion King
Note: Jeremy Irons sings most of this - Jim Cummings takes over on the final verse after "You won't get a sniff without me" because Irons lost his voice while recording

Ah, we've reached 1994. Time to watch Ed Wood and rewatch The Lion King.
Meanwhile, some FYCs:
Actor in a Leading Role: John Cusack, Bullets over Broadway Hugh Grant, Four Weddings and a Funeral Jim Carrey, The Mask Tim Robbins, The Shawshank Redemption
Actress in a Leading Role: Linda Fiorentino, The Last Seduction Kathleen Turner, Serial Mom Jessica Lange, Blue Sky Winslet and Linskey, Heavenly Creatures
Actor in a Supporting Role: James Whitmore, The Shawshank Redemption Terence Stamp, The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert
Perhaps it would be interesting to discuss Stamp's placement. I just realized that he got quite a few nods as a Lead Actor for this, and one as a Supporting Actor. It's been a long time since I saw the film, but I've always thought of it as an ensemble piece, so he would be supporting. Do you think he's co-lead?
Actress in a Supporting Role: Robin Wright and Sally Field, Forrest Gump Janeane Garofalo, Reality Bites

Awww, the year I became obssesed with that cute feline movie...
FYC BEST PICTURE:
KIESLOWSKI RED AND WHITE (he's winning, right ?). And not only the big categories, but cinematography, score, editing, even sound in Red is crucial.
TO LIVE.
POMPOKO.
QUIZ SHOW.
VIVE L'AMOUR.
QUEEN MARGOT.
VANYA ON 42ND STREET.
EXOTICA.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR SCARF, TATIANA.
And the goal should be to come up with a worthy Best Actress line-up. Even though Susan and Winona deliver good performances no one of the oscar nominees that year are worthy of the top 15: there's RED, To Live, Crooklyn, Heavenly Creatures, Muriel's Wedding, Vanya, Chungking Express, Death and the Maiden...
And while there's not a performer of the year category, I'd suggest Jean-Hughes Anglade maddenig performances in Killing Joe and Queen Margot (LEAD/SUPPORTING)

We have an interesting dilemma coming up here. Four ballots so far, and one actor has scored VERY high on both lead and support for the same role. With scores like that, he's all but guaranteed to get in on both categories. So how do we want to work that?

With scores like that, he's all but guaranteed to get in on both categories. So how do we want to work that? if Samuel L. Jackson is still in the top 7 in both categories when ballots are counted, you could just run a quick lead vs. supporting poll to determine his category and then bump up the #8 spot in the category SLJ is moved from. If worst case there's a tie in the poll, you could just break the tiebreaker yourself.

Also, we only have four ballots - most of which did not vote in all categories - so if you voted in '95, I may bug you in a couple weeks

FYC BEST PICTURE:
TAKE CARE OF YOUR SCARF, TATIANA.
I just watched this, and what a joy it was. Not sure if it'll make my best picture ballot - '94 is pretty stacked - but it probably will. Such a charmingly funny movie. A romantic comedy for awkward introverts who are addicted to coffee/vodka (pick your poison - in the quantities imbibed in this movie, both will be equally fatal).

In my eyes, that's Kaurismaki's best. Despite the short lenght, the actors and their situations expand and go beyond the usual Kaurismai's touch. Awkward introvers... in their 40s !!! deadpan humour is crucial and something like not being good at interacting with the opposite sex could be humiliating but here the lack of skills of the guys is touching because they're willing to try.
So glad you liked it. Have you seen La Vie de Bohème or Shadows in Paradise by any chance ? Kaurismaki can get a bit repetitive but the magic is in top form there as well.

This is his best, La Vie de Boheme is his second best. Haven't really cared for the others I've seen. (Haven't seen Shadows in Paradise) This is the only one that's grabbed me so far - I've always found his attempts at politics to be awful *cough* Le Havre *cough* but he's good at simplicity.

Agree, the past decade was a low point, it's always there, no need to put it in front and center and give it a proper narrative. In his latest, there's allusion to that as well but I think he deals with it much better.

Going to send my ballot between tonight and tomorrow. Pleeeease tell me that most voters are putting Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction as Lead, which he so obviously is? Like with Spacey in Usual Suspects, I refuse to not put him in Lead, but I'm hoping the voters here are more logical about Jackson being the obvious co-lead with Travolta.

Ballots almost due. I think I'll extend, as I don't want to have fewer than ten ballots. This will likely be the last year if we can't get that.

Well, I see we got to 10 ballots, so I guess that means we'll get to at least have a 1993 AMARAs. What a relief! 🙏 I look forward to these more than our annual awards for recent years.
