It seems to me that we're living in a catastrophe of common courtesy... Cinemas are no exception. Was there ever a time when human behavior ruined a film for you? (Or at least the experience of viewing it on the big screen?)

Well, just this past weekend while watching Godzilla Minus One about halfway into the movie a group of four pre-teen/early teenagers snuck in and sat right next to me, then proceed to take pictures, run around, and loudly yell for most of the movie. I'm fine with some giggling and talking here and there (all teens do it) and I didn't say anything to them (my fiancee did ask nicely *twice* to please be quiet) until one of them picked up their phone and had a conversation during the movie. I snapped and told them to "get the f*** off the phone," which I'm happy to say worked beautifully and shut them up for the rest of the movie.

I'm fine with some giggling and talking here and there (all teens do it) In my experience, adults (particularly senior citizens) are just as bad (if not worse)... |

It's not the worst experience I've had, because it's been ten years since it happened and it's still one of the funniest things I've ever experienced in a theater, but I was seated for a movie and the trailer for Gravity started playing and this older woman with the thickest Noo Yawk accent you ever heard just loudly trumpeted that drifting aimlessly in space "is my greatest fear," and I just lost it.

During Dream Scenario, someone fell asleep and began snoring as loudly as I've ever heard it, I thought they were taking the viral marketing of the film a little too far.

In terms of my own personal, film-watching experience? The Night House. I was dreadfully hungover and half-awake, while also annoyed that I'd broken one of my dental bridges the night before. It was miserable and I wasn't interesting in seeing it in the first place, but my friend wanted to go.
In terms of the audience? Iron Man 3. The sound went out for like 5 minutes and people start shouting at the screen then harassing the workers while they were trying to get it fixed. They offered people a refund if they wanted to leave, so 20ish people left because they couldn't be bothered to wait a couple minutes for the film to start again. When the sound came back on, people started clapping. Embarrassing stuff. Luckily, the film was terrible anyway.
I wouldn't say these made the cinema experience bad, but I still think about them from time to time: guy in front of me at a showing of Stalker who sat on his phone for half of the movie, then turned next to his girlfriend the second it ended to say "I didn't get it". It was the comical way he just said it instantly credits appeared that got me. Also, there was a mentally-challenged man at the back of my screening for Alien: Covenant who kept manically laughing any time characters were being brutally dismembered. It was so fucking uncomfortable, felt like being trapped inside a Peep Show episode.

My decade-long beef with Nolan started exactly in 2012 at a midnight showing of Dark Knight Rises where we got terrible seats in the front row. Took forever to get the movie started because the theater was super crowded and they had to move people around and shuffle them off to different rooms. This was my first midnight showing and I was super excited because I loved Batman Begins and Dark Knight (TDK I saw 2 or 3 times in theaters), so it was all just a recipe for disappointment. When the film finally got going, Gotham looked and felt completely different, Bane was totally unintelligible, the Tale of Two Cities analog was super on-the-nose, and it completely lacked the grit and danger of TDK, all leading up to that sad whiff of an ending and a nuclear blast out at sea. I left the theater completely deflated and Nolan has since been my sworn enemy (until Oppie).
my theater experience for Interstellar kinda blew too. I saw it in IMAX with my brother (real IMAX btw, not AMC IMAX) but also too close to the front so it wasn't a comfortable 3-hour viewing experience. Plus the movie sucked.

Tbf, Gotham in TDK looks and feels pretty different than it did in BB too. in BB we mainly see the Narrows while TDK opens it up and we see the rest of Gotham ain't much better, replacing the squalor of BB's Narrows with the corruption and greed of TDK's high-rises but they also both feel really gritty. Pittsburg has a whole different appearance and vibe and it looks nothing like Chicago, especially in the daylight scenes. and TDK was an improvement on BB while TDKR was undeniably (even its defenders have to admit this) a step down from the heights of TDK. The visual difference was just one factor separating the two but they add up pretty fast IMO... going into TDKR as a rabid fan of TDK was disappointing for a lot of people. Collective trauma  |

Probably Finding Dory. Two grannies brought a bunch of kids with them and the latter did nothing but talk, run around the theatre and stuff like that during the showing. I think I stopped going to kid-oriented movies after that experience. Another memorable one was A Quiet Place because my audience did exactly the opposite of what Krasinski was hoping for - they talked, answered phone calls, chewed on their goddamn food as loudly as possible, etc. And I must mention The Revenant too - two women sitting right behind me talked through the entire opening stretch of the film. The theatre was packed but nobody said a word to them and I was getting more and more pissed. When I realized that the much-talked-about bear scene was about to start, I lost it, turned back and let out a loud and firm "SHUT UP." They were totally shocked and one of them replied "Your words to your mouth!" (her exact phrasing) which I suppose meant "Back at you." After that neither of them said a word for the rest of the movie. I felt so proud of myself... only to be scolded by my GF after the movie for being rude to them  Why the fuck did I need to go soft? Was I meant to go "Excuse me, good ladies, would you be so kind as to speak quieter throughout the picture?" I saved the damn showing and got told off. AND was a bit let down by The Revenant after anticipating the hell out of it. What a night. |

There were a group of teenagers near us for Wakanda Forever, 1 girl and a bunch of guys. They were rowdy and obnoxious in general, but the one girl was definitely going from guy to guy and sucking them all off at one point.

In terms of behavior of others, I remember one film where I heard whispering of what was going to happen a little while before it actually did. Plus another that someone started a phone conversation.
But really, I think the worst experience for me was probably with August Rush in 2007 at the age of 12, and not because of the audience, no it was that depressing, sinking feeling that I had been had by the moviemakers or at least by the film's publicity campaign and I felt from my own frosty reaction as well as those of my parents like I was dying bit by bit while watching it.
