Based on the novel of the same name by James Clavell, which was previously adapted into a wildly successful 1980s miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune... Will you be watching? Tagging JangoB - My fellow Japanophile!

looks VERY cool, and with a lot more martial arts action than I *assume* is in the book. I've been meaning to get to that Clavell trilogy for a damn long time. My brother swears by it.

Yeah, saw the trailer when it was released - me and the woman of the house have this in-joke about Hiroyuki Sanada so we turned this on as soon as we saw him on the preview As for the trailer... not sure if I like the rounded lenses they're using.

This is getting some incredible reviews. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with 58 reviews. 84 Metacritic with 36 reviews. Might be the project to beat in the Limited Series Category for the Emmys.
Lots of claims that it"s on the same level of Game Of Thrones. Curious to check it out now.

Apparently, Cosmo Jarvis is one of the leads of this show. For a board that loves talking about actors, I'm surprised he's not talked about here a bit more. I feel like he's on the cusp of becoming what Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender became 10-15 years ago. That new British leading man that Hollywood wants to cast in everything for at least a few years before the hype cools down. He's actually what futuretrunks thinks Jack Lowden is becoming.

Cosmo Jarvis undoubtingly let the specter of Tom Hardy come inside him hard Bradley Cooper/Leonard Bernstein-style for this vocal/acting performance. Seems to be channeling The Revenant character with some lighter Eddie Brock energy. He looks fairly similar to Hardy but needs a few baseball bat connections with the face to reshape that jawline a tad; he can get there fo sho. Really loving the show so far. Playing Ghost of Tsushima this past year has really whetted my appetite for a quality Samurai adventure. Turns out a narrowed diet of only Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III and The Last Samurai wasn't sufficient enough, who would've thought!

Wasn't Jarvis attached to that Gangs of New York show that was supposed to be happening, or was that your fancasting? Either way, where is that show??? Haven't gotten around to Shogun yet but I am stoked to catch up to it.

I haven't watched this and I have no clue about who the fnck "Cosmo Jarvis" is - much less the "superstar" that he might be.............but I'm totally pulling for a guy named "Cosmo" to become a star because it's been a long time since Benedict Cumberbatch emerged and we don't have enough celebrities with funny / goofy names tbh

I don't know about him being attached to a Gangs Of New York show ( which is in development), but he's filmed a mob movie called Alto Knights ( formerly known as Wise Guys) with Robert DeNiro. It's directed by Barry Levinson and written by Nicholas Pileggi.

Jarvis has been hot shit in certain circles since he did two British indie films that caught buzz ( BAFTA nods and so forth). First was Lady Macbeth, which was Florence Pugh' s breakthrough lead role.
And probably the bigger deal for Jarvis was Calm With Horses, which co-starred Barry Keoghan. Reviews for Calm With Horses had Jarvis compared to a young Marlon Brando, and that type of shit always has the industry convinced they've found the next big thing. So yeah, he's been groomed for major leading man status for a few years now, but it's good to see they are being selective with his projects and not just rushing him into some Marvel film.

First 2 episodes are pretty fantastic. Definitely going to be the top of my queue to watch every week.

This show, two episodes in, is really very hypnotic and immersive... I didn't realize Atticus Ross was doing the score!
They also "built" seventeenth century Japan in Vancouver, so hats off to the production team... I've been to Osaka Castle and the facsimile looks amazing here...

Had an auspicious start, but it's losing me. It's spinning its wheels and feels duller and more protracted. Disappointing.

Had an auspicious start, but it's losing me. It's spinning its wheels and feels duller and more protracted. Disappointing. I tapped out a few episodes ago. Like you said, a lot of wheel spinning. It may just have been the mood I was in, and I will go back to it and see if I can continue and finish it, because there is enough quality there in certain aspects. But the Game Of Thrones comparisons did this show no favors in the long run. It's nowhere near as gripping and unmissable as that show was in it's first few seasons.

I gave up after 4 episodes. The least interesting show that looked good initially - that I remember in a long time.
