Anyone have any films they saw and immediately thought; 'That was a miserable experience.' Not anything like 'The Human Centipede' or 'Saw,' or any of that garbage. I'm talking about really Rough and Dirty pieces of Cinema. Anything from making you feel dirty, distressed, or leaving you with an empty feeling. It can also classify as a Film that was REALLY hard to get through. Here are some of my picks...
(ESPECIALLY THAT LAST ONE.)

Interesting. I've never found any of Jodorowsky's films to be particularly distressing or hard to get through. Thoughts on them?

The rape/murder scene in Frenzy (1972) was unbearably wrenching.

Schindler's List is an especially hard film for me to rewatch.

Interesting. I've never found any of Jodorowsky's films to be particularly distressing or hard to get through. Thoughts on them? I've only seen each film once, so it's possible that I was missing some kind of underlying message in them, but I was turned off from basically the word go... The excessive violence, (which normally isn't something that bothers me, but here it did) the aimless story, (which I'm assuming now is Jodorowsky's thing) and the mistreatment of women are all things that just weren't jiving with me and made both films hard to sit through. Also the fact that there wasn't really much for me as an audience member to latch onto...whether that was another character or some sort of connection to the material - those things just weren't there for me, so I found it difficult to care much at all about anything that was going on. I can appreciate Jodorowsky doing something that seemed 100% completely his own vision and exactly what he wanted to put on screen...I can't fault someone for putting their art out there for the world to see whether I end up liking it or not.

That was so bleak I actually felt exhausted when it was over.

I'll probably add more, but god damn if Martyrs doesn't take you through the wringer. Also, the last two minutes of The Mist are a real kick in the balls.
Edited after giving it some thought.
The Deer Hunter Nil by Mouth Grave of the Fireflies The Devils Dancer in the Dark Amour
I also have to mention Moneyball as it was an ordeal to sit through the tedium.

There's quite a few, but the ones that immediately spring to mind are:
Dogville The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Requiem for a Dream Funny Games (US)
There are still a lot of supposedly 'traumatic' films to see, some of which are quite high on my watchlist.

Threads (1984) haunted me for weeks. I've seen a lot of bleak movies but that one is unrelentingly dreary.

Most films that my film critic college professor put me through in class. I had to watch both of Shane Carruth's movies and wanted to gouge my fucking eyes out. Not only were they pretentious and boring as fuck but also bleak and dreary and made me resent the guy (or guys since I now hate both Carruth AND my professor). The kicker had to be when he made us watch a homemade First Blood remake that some guy made in his bedroom all by himself. I'll give the guy props for commitment but my professor's sincere love for that movie and constant trashing of literally every fucking piece of mainstream media is what cemented my hatred for him. Maybe my descriptions don't fit what you were asking for but I was always pretty miserable after watching those movies.
