Time to watch The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover again.

RIP You can make an argument that Russell Crowe is the 4th best actor in the cast of The Insider - that's how great an actor he was. He's like Ian McKellen and Mark Rylance in that you could have called him "the best actor in the world" - and it had nothing to do with his film roles...... I saw him once on stage and he was brilliant........and humble too: He says you can't afford to be as choosy about film as you can about stage roles, not if you're an English actor. "I see film roles as lovely presents that come along now and again. I feel really lucky and say thank you very much. And if they fly me to LA, I think, God, I must really be doing well. I've worked with De Niro and Brando and Pacino, and that's made me feel very lucky. But the films have never meant a lot to me."

Man, what a legend. What a face, what a VOICE. He's looked old for so long I thought he might go on forever. Few could be more terrifying than him when he got going, but he could be so cuddly and warm when he wanted to also.
I know a lot of people couldn't stand him as Dumbledore, but he came so goddamn good at the end. He is great in Half-Blood Prince, imbuing that stupid role and stupid movie with so much pensive sadness.

He is great in Half-Blood Prince, imbuing that stupid role and stupid movie with so much pensive sadness. I've said it in the past, but I preferred his Dumbledore over Richard Harris's. No disrespect to Harris, who was a fantastic actor, but his Dumbledore was far too frail and wispy that I couldn't connect him with the sheer force and power Dumbledore purportedly carried. A strong wind would knock him over. He was a decade past his prime where he could've reasonably and convincingly played that role. Gambon had the vigour and the presence, but he started off on the wrong foot because he has almost nothing to do in Azkaban and Goblet of Fire is a shitty movie based on a shitty book. He definitely got much better after that, and in Half-Blood Prince he's firing on all cylinders.

A great actor. Of course most people will remember him as Dumbledore but to me he'll always be Albert Spica in The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover.

Stuff like Harris bellowing “SIIIIILLLLEEEENNNCCCEEE!!!” during the "troll in the dungeon" scene in the first film though I think displays an underlying vigor and vitality that perhaps his outer appearance belied. All due respect to Gambon (RIP), but I always thought he was rather cold as Dumbledore and lacked Harris’s warmth... though I agree he is quite good in Half-Blood Prince.
