What would it look like? (The only criterion for this would be that the film's setting is a high school.) I think mine would go, alphabetically... The Breakfast Club (1985) Carrie (1976) Clueless (1995) Dazed and Confused (1993) Election (1999) Heathers (1989) Lady Bird (2017) Mean Girls (2004) Rushmore (1998) 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) Your turn! Edit: DeepArcher just reminded me that I forgot The Virgin Suicides (1999), which I honestly can't believe - it would absolutely make my list. But... which one to replace it with?! I might just have to do a Top 11.

1. Rumble Fi-- Er, okay -
American Graffiti Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me The Last Picture Show The Virgin Suicides Fast Times at Ridgemont High Donnie Darko A Nightmare on Elm Street (limiting myself to just one slasher, but I could just as easily put Scream or Halloween here) Love Exposure Water Lilies Licorice Pizza or The Fabelmans, take your pick!
Some of these might still be stretching the definition a bit, but anything at least partially set in or around high school felt to me like it should qualify. (American Graffiti is the one you could make the strongest case against, seeing as the main characters are high school graduates, but a big chunk of the film is set around a school dance, and I think it's crucial to the teen genre in general, so I'm just gonna roll with it.)

1. Rushmore 2. Rebel Without a Cause 3. Pretty in Pink 4. Heathers 5. The Breakfast Club
Not my favorite genre so I'll leave it at a top five, but those first two are a cut above and in my top 50 or so of all time. Not counting things like Licorice Pizza where the main character is a teen but it's not really about school. We only really see Gary in school in the picture day sequence at the beginning right?
Election is another one that is a very good movie but it's really more about the teacher and his own life so I don't think of it as a "high school movie" but I know that's a minority opinion on that one.

Basically what you do here is grab the filmographies of:
James Dean (I consider his movies pretty mediocre while he shines..... In East of Eden, at least) River Phoenix Mandy Moore Kirsten Dunst Rachel McAdams Judy Garland Harmony Korine Gus Van Sant Molly Ringwald John Hughes
And then wrap it all up with Taylor Swift songs in the background with the finale being...... it's freshman year, and I'm gonna be here for the next 4 years in this town. Dreaming one of those senior boys who'd wink at you and say I haven't seen you around here before.

1. Liz and the Blue Bird (2018) - Not what I typically think of as a "teen" film - it is far too removed from the detached cynicism I associate with the genre. It is, however, an honest drama about two friends slowly drifting apart, amidst fears of an uncertain future. 2. The Breakfast Club (1985) - Melodramatic and perfect. I can't remember what I wrote for our top movies of the 1980s poll, but people seemed to like that, so go look it up if you want more thoughts. 3. The Case of Hana and Alice (2015) - Even further removed from my concept of a "teen" film than Liz, this is a beautiful little piece of such kindness and warmth that you almost forget that it's about two girls trying to Nancy Drew a murder mystery. 4. Himizu (2011) - Humorous in its exaggerated awfulness, and yet that exaggeration of emotion is what makes the journey of the two protagonists resonate, as they search for a normal life amidst the wreckage the previous generation has left them. 5. American Graffiti (1973) - One of the most outright fun movies ever, with possibly the greatest soundtrack of all time. A longing for a better future filtered through memories of a better past.

I think it might miss the criteria but:Ngl, some great movies here.........but still what's missing says a whole lot about Boomer loving, Dope Smoking Moron Grateful Dead-isms of relating our teen years to movies that only approximate them not truly reflect them ........ Maybe the best movie ever made about teenagers.............. and how teenagers see themselves, how they see the world and how the world doesn't see them....Three 13 year olds - and 13 year olds know what's up....... also the director made the best movie about a young person losing their innocence and having their life derailed ( Lilya 4-ever).........the fact that Lukas Moodysson made both films - both achingly true and entirely different is one of the miracles of modern film tbh:

Shooting from the hip, arranged alphabetically:
Back to the Future The Breakfast Club Carrie Dazed and Confused Eighth Grade (a lot of tension is about her going to high school and she visits one, so I'm counting it) Ferris Bueller's Day Off Heathers It Follows Mouchette (not a high school movie, but wanted to shout it out) The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Sort of ranked top five-
Rushmore A Brighter Summer Day The Last Picture Show Ghost World (if it counts, there wasn't much school stuff) Dazed and Confused
Freaks and Geeks deserves a shoutout. And Welcome to the Dollhouse, but I'm not sure if that really counts.
