Last night Djokovic beat Gaël Monfils for the 19th time - 19-0 - a record (of course)..........which got me thinking the opposite - what are the great Sports related rivalries or the one you followed passinately - that were close - even if one was better than the other (Djokovic over Nadal obviously)- the rivalry between them was still close: * Ali-Frazier had 3 classic fights (Ali won 2)
* The Bengals and Chiefs are kind of having a rivalry right now ......Chiefs are winning
* Celtics-Lakers in the Bird / Magic era
* Djokovic may be entering a phase of rivalry with Alcaraz - as they have won the last 2 Grand Slams and should be 1-2 in the next several Slams?
* Yankees - Red Sox
* Nadal-Federer
*McEnroe-Borg; Sampras-Agassi; McEnroe-Connors; Evert-Navratilova
*Brady-Manning
* Djokovic - Nadal: Djokovic will win the Grand Slam battle - he already leads it with more to come too - and leads the head to head 30-29 (now)..........in theory they could play again in Nadal's farewell tour in 2024
What are some others?

I'm originally from Indiana so I always think Manning/Brady or Reggie Miller/Spike Lee (and the Knicks....speaking of, those Knicks/Heat matches in the 90s were electric. I always tell the young folks that we just don't have that same kind of hatred for each other anymore and it makes me sad and nostalgic.)

The second half of Brady and Manning after the Patriots lost their D/videotapes were fucking spectacular.
The Ravens and Steelers was awesome too during those King Joe/Fat Ben years where they just kept playing these close games over and over and over.
Combining the two, Ravens and Patriots was also pretty great for a few years too. The Ravens were like the one team in the AFC who wouldn't bend over for the Pats.
Seahawks and Niners has been pretty hot for about 10 years now, off and on.
The AFC could be one massive rivalry for years to come with the way it looks right now.
Outside of the NFL, Brazil and Italy in football is right up there. They hardly play, and it's rarely competitive, but two nations with two diametrically opposed philosophies with so much success over so many years is always something to look forward to.
United and Arsenal was pretty fucking intense for a few years before Mourinho came along and buried Wenger.
Federer and Nadal for 4 years from Miami 2005 to Australia 2009 was amazing. Opposing personalities, opposing styles, all those slam finals, different surfaces suiting different guys, and all of it under the mighty sell of the swoosh.
Bulls and Pistons was amazing for a few years there, and while it was pretty one-sided, that Lebron vs. the Warriors run was pretty epic too. I doubt/hope we won't see the same two teams playing 4 finals in a row again any time soon. I get a feeling like Kings and Warriors could be pretty cool for the next couple of years. Fuck 'em up, Coach Brown.

I'm from Greece so it's obviously Olympiakos - Panathinaikos for me both in football (which is one of the most heated derby's in Europe, even called Derby of the eternal enemies) and in basketball (with great games, not only at domestic leagues, but international ones as well).

The only one I've ever really cared about is Penguins vs. Flyers

Won't mean anything to anyone here, but Giants v Bulldogs in the AFL.

College football has the best rivalries in North American sports. Alabama-Auburn, Michigan-Ohio State, Notre Dame-USC, Florida State-Miami, Florida-Florida State, Florida-Georgia, Oklahoma-Texas, Army-Navy. Plus some defunct ones like BYU-Utah, Oklahoma-Nebraska, and Texas-Texas A&M. The kind of thing where you can have a great year but it's a failure if you lose that one game which is what really makes a rivalry for me.
I'll do one for everything else-
NFL- Cowboys-Redskins historically. 2 NFC championship matchups and duked it out for what was the best division in the NFL for decades with teams full of HOFmers. Then of course the names made it perfect, Commanders just isn't the same. If it's got to be something relevant recently then Peyton and Brady (since Peyton played on two teams). Some people are comparing Mahomes vs Burrow or Allen to this and although the games have been great but it's not the same because you knew Peyton and Brady were the two best to ever do it up to that point. Mahomes might be now but Allen and Burrow are a cut below. Plus there was such a personality and playstyle contrast with Peyton and Brady that doesn't really exist here.
MLB- Yankees-Red Sox. Nothing else needs to be said.
NBA- I'll go Celtics-Sixers. Celtics-Lakers feels like more of a media construct, Celtics-Sixers has the geography, have played more than any other two teams in the playoffs, and hate each other even when one of them's having a down year.
CBB- Duke-UNC. Another obvious one like Yanks-Sox.
NHL- Leafs-Canadiens. Historically speaking another no brainer.
Golf- Nicklaus-Palmer. Finished 1-2 in 5 majors (more than any pair) with three of them being classics.
Tennis- Fed-Nadal. More interesting than Djokovic-Nadal due to the extreme playstyle contrast and there's more debate as to who is better. Then of course Navratilova-Evert for women's.
Boxing- Ali-Frazier for another easy one

Biased, but there is nothing like the NFCE when it comes to rivalries. 13 Superbowl wins between us... the proximity between NY and Philly...
Well everyone hates the Eagles, but no one more than a Giants fan!
Now we're back to being mostly good again, it's gonna be a lot of fun for at least a few years... if we can beat the Eagles or Boys, at least.
NFCBeast is here!

I'm a Ravens fan and as a Ravens fan the only thing I love more than a Ravens victory is seeing the Steelers lose.
