Roman Polanski - The most masterpieces
Coppola - The highest peaks
Martin Scorsese - Less masterpices but more great films - over more years (?) - and depth of them (Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Irishman)
Robert Altman - The most representative of American themes and ideas in his 70s peak and a great 2nd career late (see Friedkin below)
Brian De Palma - Love him, but doesn't have the range of material of these guys ^
David Lynch - Never liked him much until later but Mulholland Drive is a masterpiece at least and he sure doesn't suck - kind of like Radiohead - like even if you don't like 'em nobody does 'em better than they do themselves
Probably Hal Ashby next for The Last Detail alone tbh but some other things.......I like Friedkin but not his post-Cruising work much - Killer Joe and Bug - are failures imo and actually The Exorcist is a better familial / religious drama to me than a horror......

Actually Woody Allen would be even with Altman for me.......it's so weird with Allen who is such a great writer (or is / was at his best) I almost don't think of him as a filmmaker in a way......he was a distinction / title all to himself

Actually Woody Allen would be even with Altman for me.......it's so weird with Allen who is such a great writer (or is / was at his best) I almost don't think of him as a filmmaker in a way......he was a distinction / title all to himself I may sound super unprofessional rn (and have to be far from the first person who points this out), but that's what keeps him from being a God-tier "filmmaker" for me (he's an all-timer as a figure and yes, writer for screen)… all of his films look and sound the same, and I love what they're about and more often than not, how (effortlessly) they seem to be about them... they're like chapters in a long-ass novel with sort of the same characters/types... Altman's is also like this you could argue, but he does experiments with sound and camera (I dig his zoom-ins and outs and idk why) and his "types" of people vary more; I've never been bored with an Altman joint. On the other hand... |

Yes, I totally get that - I think a lot of people feel that way - I mean a lot of people specifically prefer Spike Lee to Allen because of it ....or as I like to call them "people who are wrong"  It's kind of amazing Allen achieved what he did with the Academy given his style (or limitations if you prefer) - lots of BD nods and a win, some BP nods and a win, several Oscars for performances in his films, 3 Screenplay wins........he's an odd duck in American cinema history really ........even in that way he worked for a long time: 1 original film, no sequels, that he wrote, every year - for years - regardless of how his films performed at the box office.......... |

1) Altman - GOAT among GOATs.
2) Lynch - best living director imo, even though his filmography is deeply flawed and rather short...
3) De Palma - like Lynch, he can be excruciatingly bad... also like Lynch, he can go from idiocy to genius in a heartbeat... but De Palma is the best stylist of them all (also, De Palma > Hitchcock).
4) Coppola - rightfully mythical for his 70s run, but Rumble Fish and Dracula show a heck of an artist still at work.

5) Scorsese - love Marty, but he's the "less great" of the 70s quartet imo (Altman/Coppola/De Palma/Scorsese)... Mean Streets and Taxi Driver are godly, but already Raging Bull is a more impersonal kind of great film, and his 90s and 00s are a creative ruin (including the mind-numbingly boring Casino and The Departed)... he can be utterly dull in a conventional way, which Altman/De Palma/Lynch never are... but I do appreciate the recent Martynaissance (Wolf/Silence/Irishman) which shows a considerable rejuvenation.
6) Polanski - on talent alone I would rank him higher than this. Two pitch-black comic masterpieces (Rosemary's Baby & The Tenant) that will probably go unsurpassed. He's never less than interesting. The Pianist Oscar richly deserved. But I'm a Chinatown/Tess agnostic (though the latter is one of the most beautiful films ever made), so he's #6...
7) Spielberg - Duel/Sugarland Express/Jaws/Close Encounters is a perfect run. I don't care for the guy post-70s, but in the 70s? First-tier dude.

8) Hal Ashby - basically for The Last Detail, Shampoo and Bound for Glory.
9) William Friedkin - basically for Sorcerer and bits of the French Connection.
10) Woody Allen - for the superb Love & Death.

(I've brought up the same question before, when there was a talk of experimental cinema going on. "how does one even rate a Barkhage film?", though Lynch is far easier to engage with I know. Subjective and kinda hard to explain, but... take Twin Peaks: The Return for example. Brilliant work, best "film"/series of the decade, however you want to call it. But Lynch's genius isn't tidy. There are scenes in the penultimate episode for example, the whole fight with BOB, that go way beyond "eccentric", into garish and beyond - only someone as talented as Lynch could be this monstrously BAD - it is one of the most atrocious things I have ever seen - not even Lynch's killer sense of humor can salvage it. (This is obviously my personal take and I'm aware it's among people's favorite episodes....) And yet.... the scene coexists with brilliance and it's ultimately inseparable from the series as a whole. What I mean is, Lynch is on the verge of unwatchability a lot of the time (so is De Palma) and I wouldn't have it any other way, because it makes him who he is. I don't intend it as a major criticism (if I did, I'd probably hate his work). But even with surreal/experimental directors you can usually spot the good, the bad and the ugly as in anybody else's stuff. FWWM is too schizophrenic for me (I understand it's meant to be The Passion of Laura Palmer, but my god), and I side with the 1992 reception in that it really isn't very good. But I love the original show and The Return, to bits... and FWWM is a key element of the whole mythos... that's half the fun of being a TW/Lynch fan for me  |

Ridley Scott Hard for me to consider Kubrick or Lumet New Hollywood since they had come up in the studio system of the 1950s consistently working a solid decade before Bonnie and Clyde came out and truly ushered in the New Hollywood era. |
