To my mind, her career has gone through two transformations - from Dawson's Creek pin-up to Oscar-nominated thespian with Brokeback Mountain, and then managing to emerge from the long, tragic shadow of Heath Ledger's death to become one of the world's most sought-after, respected actresses. As the NY Times has it, she is the "tragic embodiment of grief, in life and in art." Not to mention her work for reproductive rights and equal pay - she's brilliant. Please, share your thoughts on her acting talents. What would you like to see next from her? How about a list of your personal nominations and wins for her?

One of the most inconsistent actresses alive. She's either extremely good or extremely bad, with very little wiggle-room. I only really like one of her Oscar nominations (Blue Valentine).

Oh, I definitely disagree... I think she's good to great in all of them, with My Week with Marilyn being the one I would rank last. Not to mention her Emmy-winning masterclass in Fosse/Verdon... For my personal nominations for her, I'd probably go: 2005: Supporting Actress, Brokeback Mountain2008: Actress, Wendy and Lucy2010: Actress, Blue Valentine2016: Supporting Actress, Manchester by the SeaI might have to revisit some of the years - she'd be just outside my lineups for Take This Waltz, I Feel Pretty*, and The Fabelmans (in Supporting, obvi). *She conveys grief and depression more vividly than nearly any other working actor, but how fun was this scene-stealing comedic turn?!

* Best American actress of her generation and in her 40s .......she is very much like Pacino was in the 70s where you could argue him as "best" yet he was without an Oscar ........ she has to watch everyone win an Oscar while she polishes her Emmy (in his case it was 2 Tony's) * Not merely nominated 5 times (deserved 'em) you could have nodded her for a whole bunch of others quite easily too * Convincingly played Monroe and Verdon although she is not much like either...... * She is one of the few actresses in her age group who often "thinks like a man" in how she builds a character - she encourages choices that are abrasive but serve the piece......if you dislike her.......well great actors aren't usually ones you like all the time.......and her performances age well too imo...... * She has an insane amount of scenes that she herself makes special - " My school is" in Shutter Island ; the bad offensive joke opposite Gosling in Blue Valentne......she does that kind of thing constantly actually where she "makes" scenes great herself * She is also particularly good at acting when she is not speaking......suppressing speech and feelings - which is a real gift since she is great verbally too * She has this thing - again like a male actor often gets - where she gets credit for things she didn't actually do - would have been a great Janis Joplin and Christa McAuliffe.......ah well...... * Has an amazing collection of auteurs who seek her out - wanna see how great she is? See who casts her...... * One day people will look back on the best male actor / actress of this era - see that they were co-stars and see they are from Dawson's Creek and Growing Pains

I love her as an actress but particularly want to shoutout her underrated turn in Take This Waltz taking a character that under lesser hands could have just been a nuisance - an indecisive (but not passive) woman idling between her loving if a bit dull husband and the temptation of a more physically passionate affair is the stuff of puritan nightmares - and instead infuses it with an honesty that allows us to track the thoughts of the character even as we may disagree with them. She never condescends to the character, there's no tell that Michelle Williams the actress is commenting on the character or providing her own insights, while still allowing herself to be witty if not funny, clever if not smart. It's the kind of thing most American actresses don't get to do: play a character who is on their face selfish, immature, and inconsiderate while still being afforded the dignity of being a complete human being.

I don't have the ability to wax poetic about actors so I'll just say that I absolutely adore her, mostly because I find her consistently surprising. I once thought that she was better suited for more down-to-earth characters but she proved me wrong time and time again which to me is one of the most exciting things an actor can do.
Personal nominations/wins?
2005, Best Supporting Actress - Brokeback Mountain (#4) 2008, Best Actress - Wendy and Lucy (#4) 2010, Best Actress - Blue Valentine (#2) 2012, Best Actress - Take This Waltz (#3) 2016, Best Supporting Actress - Manchester by the Sea (#5) 2022, Best Supporting Actress - The Fabelmans*** 2023, Best Actress - Showing Up (#2... so far... probably won't stay in the top 5 though)

I've never been blown away by her tbh,not even in Manchester by the Sea.A little overrated in my opinion. You have to admit, though - she's one of the few American actors who can sound authentically English in a modern-film setting (most everyone can do it in a period film). Remember Me Without You?

I think she's great and like many already above said, one of the best of her generation. Remembe rthe Dawson's Creek days and thinking she was doing the best with what she was giving, on paper her dead scene is but she took that show as an acting school. And she has that personal stamp that prevails even in her more comedic turns, as in I Feel Pretty, yes, she's very fun to watch but I always had the impression that her character could break at any moment and show her true self. I'm not always fond of her movies (rarey, really) but she's enough reason to watch it one, even two times, first time I saw The Fabelmans didn't like what she was doing, second time, was the one aspect that I paid the most attention to.
Not many noms because she's at her best in highly competitive years:
2005: Brokeback Mountain 2008: Wendy and Lucy 2012: Take this Waltz 2016: Certain Women 2022: The Fabelmans

Who among the Dawson's Creek crowd ever had her as a pinup?
She'll always be Jen Lindley to me, but among her film performances...... Land of Plenty, Wendy and Lucy, Blue Valentine, and Meek's Cutoff. Both Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams didn't waste much time after Dawson's Creek. Katie did Pieces of April and Michelle did Land of Plenty. But Michelle started to separate herself while Katie faded.

Who among the Dawson's Creek crowd ever had her as a pinup? I was more or less making reference to the type of show it was (ie aimed at teens). I neither know nor care anything about it beyond that.

I remember her Dawson's Creek days. Is it much of a compliment to say she acted circles around Katie Holmes and James Vanderbeek? Not really, but once I started seeing her show up in all these indie movies, she finally seemed right at home.
Blue Valentine is my favorite thing she's done. When I think of her in that movie, I remember that uncomfortable scene where she runs from her husband into the bathroom, shuts the door and just breaks down, incredibly.

Just out of curiosity, how would you guys rank her five Oscar nominations? pacinoyes1. Blue Valentine 2. Brokeback Mountain 3. Manchester by the Sea 4. The Fabelmans 5. My Week with Marilyn I absolutely love the first four and I think she's more than solid as Norma Jeane.

1. Blue Valentine 2. Manchester by the Sea 3. Brokeback Mountain 4. The Fabelmans 5. My Week with Marilyn
Marilyn is the only one I consider a particularly weak nomination. She's trying her damnedest and fighting uphill with a mediocre script and dull direction, but she succumbs to the Marilyn stereotypes the film is constructed around. She has Meek's Cutoff and Take This Waltz the same year, though, so I'm cool with the nod.

TylerDeneuveI'd agree with how you ranked 'em ^ Blue Valentine & Fosse / Verdon are her greatest works imo........I said this earlier - she's so odd because some of her very best work missed being nodded - Wendy and Lucy (all the Reichardt ffs!), Shutter Island.....she could easily have 7 nods (or more) in her early 40s.....

I nominate her for My Week with Marilyn, Blue Valentine, The Fabelmans, and I also have a soft spot for her supporting role in The Station Agent (she's only in three or four scenes, but she's so natural and so efortlessly captivating in it). So, in total, four nominations (no wins). Can't say I'm a fan of her other two nominated performances (Manchester by the Sea and Brokeback Mountain). And I loved her in Dawson's Creek, of course. That show is part of my adolescence.

"The contrast of Portman's dark and Williams' light beauty is so striking, visually." TylerDeneuve - and of course he dresses the blonde in black.......and the brunette in white.......I like how Williams seems to notice the smell and think "She always smells so nice....but this is ........different!"
