Both are roughly the same age and have had strong reputations and both have gotten Oscar nominations in the past. I could be wrong, But it looks like PT Anderson has a slight lead in overall Oscar nominations, but both have a decent amount between them, no doubt!! Obviously both could win Oscar later on in their careers, it hardly impossible, maybe even likely, but who has a better chance in your mind? What will happen here? Thanks in advance for comment and opinions!!

I feel like with PTA, it's only a matter of time. Eleven nominations (with only two of his movies being blanked completely by the Academy, and one was his debut that came out the same year as his big breakthrough) and his last two films got Director nominations. I feel he could easily follow the Orson Welles route (someone he's been compared to in the past, notably by Ben Affleck) and get potentially a single writing win and that be it, but I feel there's so much goodwill for him and appreciation that it just depends on the timing. But we're seeing him transitioning very nicely into the elder statesman role, as seen with him teaming up with Marty and Stevie to save TCM.
Wes, I can see it going either way. I don't see him winning Best Animated Feature as long as Pixar/Disney reign supreme (although if they decided to partner with him, he's locked), and he could also win a writing Oscar... but I feel Budapest was the apogee of everything the Academy would appreciate about him and he still missed the win.

PTA seems like a safer choice, if that makes any sense. He's directed more Best Picture nominees and actually seemed pretty close last time with Licorice Pizza. So if past success means much here, PTA is probably *closer* at this point.

And his rumoured upcoming project has some big Oscar-friendly names attached to it, if the scuttlebutt is true.

PTA might win- if the Coens had already won for Fargo, he might already have won for TWBB. Maybe he wins in a year where a smaller indie movie like CODA wins Best Picture. Wes seems more like the type that gets a screenplay Oscar and a career achievement award

I was legitimately confused as I read half of that post because I thought this was between Wes and Paul W.S. Anderson

PTA!
Clearly the academy loves him (three noms for Licorice Pizza !!) and he gets actors noms (9 times - on 9 films) and Wes has never had an actor nominated - he may be the most notable American director alive to never get one of their actors a nomination.... besides Mamet and Abel Ferrara (I prefer those guys).
I think Wes will eventually sneak a Screenplay win (Original category more dire by the day) and he does have something in his favor: an increased output. (Will his Dahl short films be released individually or as a lil mini-series? He may win an Emmy before an Oscar.)

Wes hasn't really been that successful with the Academy outside of Grand Budapest. PTA's gotten the BP/Director/Screenplay nod trifecta three times plus three acting nods for The Master. I still feel like he's a guy who gets nominations but is too cool to ever win but the odds are higher than with Wes.

Wes has been nominated for 7 Oscars. 3 for original screenplay. 2 for Animated Feature. One for Picture and Director for TGBH. I like the question because both directors make unique art you have to think about days after viewing. My answer is Paul.

I actually think there is a chance that Wes Anderson could get an original screenplay Oscar before Paul Thomas Anderson gets any Oscar. There could be a year where one of his movies gets a little more love than usual. That is the category where they could easily throw a trophy at a smaller, quirky but loved film.
Paul Thomas Anderson has had bad luck. My favorite, Phantom Thread, was never getting anything beyond nominations. There Will Be Blood was his best shot but he was up against the Coens. The Master - robbed of a nomination. He didn't look too happy when he lost screenplay for Magnolia, but the Academy was too busy drooling over American Beauty that year. Hopefully one day. He is more active now.
