Meet Bobi, a 31-year old Portuguese guard dog. In human years, he would be 217 years old. Bobi lives on a farm, only eats human food, and never been chained or collared. Pretty impressive. Most dogs I know never lasted past 12 years old.

There are a lot of factors: genes, size of dog, nutrition, and the environment. Bobi looks well fed and has plenty of space to roam. Many owners euthanize their pets after they get a certain age. But I do agree: we feed them junk food because we love them, and understand we like to eat "bad stuff" too. |

Bobi looks well fed and has plenty of space to roam. Many owners euthanize their pets after they get a certain age. But I do agree: we feed them junk food because we love them, and understand we like to eat "bad stuff" too. Oh certainly, I'm overgeneralizing. But I do think that pets are not given ideal nutrition - primarily because it costs extra money - and this leads to poor health long before they should suffer from it. |

My last dog (grew up with dogs, now a cat person) liked the cheaper brands. He lasted 12 years -- had a seizure and passed away. Bobi seems to have great genes, lots of room to walk/run in a safe environment, and gets fed more nutritious food. |

Lots of dogs here get older than 17 yo (my previous dog died at 17), probably because they live indoors in a warm place, get veterinarian cares and suitable pet food. |
