I'm for it......always surprised by those that say "the state" shouldn't have the right......the state has every other right in the US - from mundane : they decide who drives.......who wears seat belts when driving.........who pays taxes........who inherits wealth.......to far more profound: who goes to war etc.
I mean I get it, as a theoretical/philosophical position but in reality......the state can (and should) decide what functions within it and who is deserving to live in society.......McVeigh to me is the obvious example....deserved the death penalty, got the death penalty, within 4 years iirc.

Look, I'm in favour of the death penalty as well, because certain criminals just cannot find any sort rehabilitation in prison (religious fundamentalists for instance). But how trustful can a government be? How can you know that a certain government can't use it, so as to "legally" get rid of "irritating" opposition with any kind of false charges. Even if justice should work seperate from the government, only someone that is clearly very naive could believe that it actually does. So the death penalty can easily be used (and is used) for handy political excecutions. And this is a point that I rarely see discussed by those that are against the death penalty, even though it is one of the main reasons for death penalty abolishment.

However I am not in favor of executing McVeigh say - an expressly political case - because of his rehabilitation at all - that seems odd to me..........to me his death was "just" for the crime he committed.

In my opinion it is not only about criminals finding rehabilitation, but for the rest of the world leaning into forgiveness for the actions they committed, while they are still alive.
A human who did you harm and you forgive them, can't help but think twice to harm you again.
