I actually still use this service for stuff that isn't streaming or I can't find anywhere else. Still have a giant queue of stuff that's been sitting on there for over a decade and I haven't gotten around to watching yet...

The end of an era. I've been using this since 2007 and having movie nights with my dad ever since. I had heard that this might be happening so I made a letterboxd list essentially preserving my dvd history. Watched hundreds of movies for the first time - mostly classics and its where I've discovered a lot of my all-time favorites. Netflix used to have your streaming history available as a list as well but that seems to have disappeared within the past few years.

So yesterday was the last shipment, and DVD subscriptions have now been closed. Got an email last month about possibly receiving up to 10 extra discs in the mail, but apparently that won't apply to everyone. No charge for any unreturned discs!

Yeah it’s a weird feeling. I started getting the dvds and having movie nights with my dad when I was 16, which was half a lifetime ago, and kept it up till this day. We’ll have other movie nights, so the important part of it all isn’t going away, but I’ll miss getting those red envelopes. My last Netflix dvd ended up being Billy Wilder’s One, Two, Three. I managed to recreate my whole dvd history as a Letterboxd list (here: boxd.it/kcb6a ) but it was nice to see Netflix email us our full history as well.

in the 2010s what movies I couldn't get from my local library I could find online so I never used this service and was really surprised it was still running until recently. In the 2000s we used Blockbuster (and Family Video before they closed down) but never Netflix, at least not for rentals. Honestly even in the 2010s the idea of having a movie snail-mail delivered to you and for you to have to send it back just seemed like such a hassle. We never used RedBox either...
Come to think of it not much more of a hassle than checking DVDs out of your local library but that's just what we were used to I guess.
