A Thousand And One premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and it ended up winning the Grand Prize for Best U.S. Dramatic Competition. This is the same award CODA, Minari, Whiplash, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Winter's Bone, and Precious won. Rotten Tomatoes currently has the film at about 97% approval. Critics Choice rated the film with a 92/100 score. Last weekend, the film opened at #7 at the box-office and grossed almost 2 million dollars in less than a 1,000 screens. Based on my reading of the critical reviews, there seems to be a lot of praise for Teyana Taylor's performance.
What do you guys think? Keep in mind that Focus Feature is the distributor

She has great acclaim out of Sundance and it seems to be extraordinarily baity, and Focus doesn't have too many Best Actress candidates as of now. There's her, there's Qualley/Viswanathan in the Ethan Coen road trip movie, and as far as I know, that's all they have at this time.
However, she is a complete unknown and it's hard for newcomers, particularly women of color, to break in unless the film itself comes along with her. And Best Actress is looking particularly imposing at this stage.
I'm gonna say unlikely at this stage. She needs to be a critics' favourite to overcome her newcomer status and for the film itself to get momentum.

She isn't even the best PoC actress to come out of Sundance this year - that's going to be Greta Lee in Past Lives (supposed to see this early) - I'm all about PoC getting in and breaking the systemic racism of the Academy ........nah, just kidding, I don't care.......but she has a tough path and some big female roles this year in BP type films.
Unlikely.........not impossible......

I think if ATAO continues to get sparkling reviews and continues to perform well at the box-office, I think we might see more than just a Best Actress nomination. Right now, I am going to stick with Indie Spirit nod. It will also depend on the priorities for Focus Features.

This far out, there seems to be too much competition for her to stand out in an early release that isn't going to get any other noms.

Zoe Rose Bryant seems like she praises nearly everything. She was singing Sadie Sink’s praises after watching her bad performance in The Whale. I don’t really trust her. But I agree there’s buzz

She’s a C-list singer/dancer and has some celebrity. That sounds mean, but that’s the best way I can describe it 💀. I’ve known about her for a few years now. She’s Tinashe and Victoria Monet type fame

But I agree there’s buzz Taylor is getting rave reviews for the performance. It is not just Ms. Bryant. If the film continues to soar and not fade away, she is in the Best Actress mix.

Just saw the film and she's terrific, but I don't see anything beyond an Indie Spirit nod. If she can get on one of the roundtables or Variety's Actors on Actors, that itself would be a major win for her and the film.

See it's weird for me to hear Teyana Taylor referred to as a complete unknown. But I have to realize I suppose she is to people who don't necessarily follow urban media. Actually, her most mainstream moment is that Kanye video "Fade" where she... made people want to hit the gym hard after it dropped. But yeah, she's one of those people who does it all - primarily an R&B singer (though not as big as SZA). But back to the award contender conversation, never mind her race, this just looks like one of those Independent Spirit Award level films at best.
