One of the greats. I love his scores for The Last Emperor, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and Wuthering Heights. RIP.

Just discovered that he apparently co-wrote the moody ambient score to the new production of A Doll’s House with Jessica Chastain that's currently on Broadway. Kept working right up to the end...

Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus is streaming on the Criterion Channel - it's mandatory viewing for even the most casual of fans. Documenting the last concert he ever held, it's simply him alone with his piano onstage in Tokyo. Beautifully lit and choreographed, Sakamoto, cancer-stricken but resilient, pours his soul into his best known compositions (from Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, The Last Emperor, The Sheltering Sky, etc.). Art is eternal, life is short. With tears in my eyes - Thank you for everything, Mr. Sakamoto. ![](https://static01.nyt.com/images/2024/03/15/multimedia/opus1-jcpl/opus1-jcpl-jumbo.jpg?quality=75&auto=webp)
