Get Shorty (1995) The Birdcage (1996) Heartbreakers (2001) The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
I'd go:
1. The Royal Tenenbaums - easily the best of the bunch, and in his top 10 performances overall.
2. The Birdcage - riotously funny as a thickheaded, ingratiating politician showing delusional pride, comical outrage and disgust, with funny bemused expressions, acting almost child-like at times. Great comic timing, and I love the way he delivers asinine, mindless boring conversation with hilarious sincerity.
3. Heartbreakers - a great crusty, repulsive old man performance with a comically sickly coughing habit, and amusingly flustered, furrowed-brow, quizzical expressions. Some hilarious moments of dazed erotic pleasure and repugnant sexual desire.
4. Get Shorty - Hackman is especially good at playing characters who smile with contempt and put on a pleasant face to hide displeasure. Some very funny moments of bewilderment, and I love his pained expressions.

1) The Royal Tenenbaums 2) Get Shorty 3) The Heartbreakers 4) The Birdcage
His little comedic masterclass in Young Frankenstein was great too. If people thought Cooper should have been nominated for his small cameo in a Licorice Pizza then Gene also deserves an FYC.

This run - from a guy who had been mostly lacking comedy in his resume - not always but mostly compared to the other 70s GOATs imo - changed his entire late career and made some earlier comedic work in drama see funnier too (Scarecrow, French Connection). It's an amazing run ......

I've always thought he was pretty funny in French Connection - "Anybody want a milkshake?"

The Royal Tenenbaums is top of the heap. The man has three legendary all-timer performances and this is one of them. Searingly funny stuff.
The other three are kinda interchangeable for me depending on the day, but he is fantastic in all three.
