They lost contact with him since last Friday, during a trip on the mountains.

I actually met him a few years ago and he was really nice and pleasant to talk to. He was happy to talk about The Killing Fields and Rose Red, which were my two favourite projects of his. I do hope he's okay.

You may want to change the thread title, as that makes it sound like he's dead.

last I heard they found his empty car but no evidence that he's dead. Really hope he's OK and will be found soon

We use "disperso" when someone can't be found, but they might reappear or simply they were in another place. It's often used for people in an earthquake or other disasters, a list of missing people (different from the ones actually found dead or injured).

According to google, the English "disperse" means - distribute or spread over a wide area, - go to or cause to go in different directions or different destinations - (with reference to gas, smoke, mist or cloud) thin out or cause to thin out and disappear The overarching theme is taking one thing and diffusing it over a wider area, although I can see the similarity (someone could "disperso" to a different location from where they disappeared).

Apparently he's had a close call in the past:

If it's him, I'm glad his family has closure.

it was clear weeks ago that closure was the best possible outcome here. Very sad for his friends and loved ones.
