I have liked him in stuff but even I say he doesn't deserve a nod for Aftersun where he is underplaying so much he maybe is doing "nothing" and getting way too much credit - I mean, I think he's good there but not "great" exactly but this is a huge deal.........and this suggests what Ridley Scott saw to be in Gladiator 2....... I mean in general he seems too soft for these Alpha male roles but his upcoming movies are apparently more in this vein ............interesting career he's putting together......the West End is getting a lot of big turns ..........and I'm sure a Tony and Olivier one for Jodie Comer - unless Chastain pulls something really great out of A Doll's House which I doubt tbh (Prima Facie being a one woman show goes a loooooooooooong way with awards) Wonder if this will come to the US or be filmed for the National Theatre like Comer's Prima Facie and many others have been........

The_Cake_of_Roth - I'm seeing both back-to-back, so I'll let you know which performance I prefer.

Without having seen a very good perf of his yet, I think Mescal has a much higher career potential than most of his generation.... bc of work like Aftersun (overrated but still) and the response to Streetcar here........ simply, that he can pull off father roles and Stanley Kowalski (!!). What other 20y/os can do that? I'll just point to Chalamet who (27) still comes off like a high school kid in w'e he does, and it limits him.
For this production, they have a young Blanche - Patsy Ferran (also raved) who is 33 and seems younger. Is that unusual for Streetcar productions? I'd like to see this.... also possibly another film adaptation (and hopefully they'll keep the great grape monologue intact unlike Kazan's!).

Mescal just got nominated for an Olivier award. Talk about an exciting young talent. With Paul and Barry, Ireland's cornering the market on the generational talents. I would love it if those two became the Irish equivalent of Pacino and De Niro.

An Olivier nomination for Mescal now makes this more likely to show up in National Theater Live presentations or maybe even a Broadway run .......let's keep an eye on that for next theater season.......
Following up on what stephen said - the Pop Culture explosion of Ireland is really amazing - in film, theater, and if you read my music posts - Pop Music the last year and a half from Ireland as well......
