Watched "Legionnaire" (such a gorgeous movie) earlier today, and find myself once again in awe at his vulnerability. Guy's built an action hero persona basically characterized by reluctance and frailty, of all things. Bonafide phenomenon.
Favourite film/performance of his? I love the aforementioned "Legionnaire", but "In Hell" takes the cake for me (on both counts).

I've seen 33 of his movies, but I haven't yet seen Legionnaire. Your good word of mouth makes me want to check it out though.
He was very good in In Hell, and also in Wake of Death. He played himself in JCVD, very convincingly, not sure who else could have pulled that off. He shows real skill as an actor and is able to express vulnerability. Many "action stars" can barely emote at all!
My cousin met him once, during the filming of Timecop, said he was nice and friendly.

Universal Soldier was a wonderful film. More for Dolph than him, but still.

Bloodsport should be required viewing for all people who travel abroad because it's *exactly* what happens when you do.

Amazingly he's somehow gotten better as he's gotten older. Those DTD films he's done have been great for his career. Compare to that Seagal who's gotten much fatter & lazier & it's like a world of difference.

I do have a soft spot for him and some of his cheesy films like Bloodsport, which has endless amounts of terrible, quotable dialogue. Also, he has other decent ones like Lionheart / A.W.O.L and Timecop.
Also, I'll love him forever for his delivery of the line "My nipples were so cold, they started talking to me".

Best Actor ever.
Okay, seriously: While not a great actor, Van Damme was out of those pure action-actors like him, Schwarzenegger, Lundgren, Seagal and so on easily the one I liked the most. (well, aside from Jackie Chan). While his roles didn't demand much acting he didn't seem to try as hard as Schwarzenegger or Lundgren and therefore it seemed more realistic and less ridiculous.
And his turn in JCVD was pretty good with lots of self-mockery.
