Francis Ford, that is. We can certainly all take a moment to appreciate his greatest achievement, though :

Victor Fleming had both The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind in a 10-nominee year.

Well as I'm prone to do - let me first insult the board - twice:......you missed The Godfather Part 3 in its initial cut and "Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone" is significantly better than its orginal cut..... Owen Gleiberman Variety TOP CRITIC Dec 4, 2020 I urge you to seek Coda out, because it truly does touch the grandeur of the first two films. Even if it can't match it. The Conversation which is my all-time #2.......don't know if I mentioned that ever....

1. The Godfather Part II - Right up there for me as one of the best films ever made. Pacino's performance is the best ever, its prequel/sequel structure is ingenious and I frankly don't understand why more sequels don't rip it off (shoutout to Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again), and the ending's cumulative power has rarely been equaled. 2. The Godfather - Ditto, only lesser to its successor in terms of its ambition (and I've never been over the moon about the Michael in Sicily sequences despite Pacino carrying them). 3. Apocalypse Now - Absolute masterpiece. Coppola reaching for a new cinematic form full of blood and ash scored to The Doors. What more could you want? 4. The Conversation - An elegy for privacy and conscience as well as Hackman's absolute finest performance. It was always going to age well as the advancement and ease of access to surveillance technology went on. Sound design is some of the best in film history.
5. The Godfather Part III or The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone - I've spoken before about how I feel this movie for all the merits it does possess fails as a continuation of the character of Michael Corleone, rendering him unrecognizable and smoothing over edges that were so entrancing they marked one of the most significant cinematic legacies of any character put on screen. Even the legendary shadows of the first two films are brightened up here, where Gordon Willis' experiments in harsh lighting and shadows have been pulled back considerably. Most interesting as Coppola's exploration into his grief over his son as well as a demonstration for what a brilliant writing tandem and director can manage when rushed by an uncompromising studio schedule, but otherwise limps along as a merely passable film.
