The 100 Greatest Movies of All Time by VarietyA couple of wtfs aside ( when will we move on from Kramer v Kramer?, number 10 is unexpected ) this one aligns better to my sensibilities (maybe a little too english language but whatever), is not as film-social-studies driven as a recent one, the voters seem to have sense of humor and the particular "out there" entries are understandable... Pink Flamingos is sort of repulsive but if John Waters is making the list it should be for that one.

I'll give them props for including The Road Warrior. Usually any Mad Max film that makes it onto a Greatest films list is Fury Road.

* Seems more like a personal list than something canonical tbh
* Saying it again the greatest actors are in the greatest movies - a quick look and I may have missed it - 2 Pacino - top 25, 2 Nicholson, 3 De Niro and that's without Taxi Driver or Raging Bull unless I missed 'em......3 Brando.....it doesn't matter who does the list or what you switch out - there's always 5 or 6 movies to replace them - 2 or 3 each with - from those guys floating around.....because they are the American top 4 - not because of their "great movies" but as an extension of their work in them
* I could argue with a lot of the picks but major dissing of things like Sunset Blvd which would fit perfectly on the kind of list it is
* Natural Born Killers is a thumbs down btw - so is Tree of Life......um

Do The Right Thing and Malcolm X in the top 100! Oh dear....guess the claim that Denzel had no top 100 movies of all time by any credible publication or organisation lists lasted a good 3 weeks Congrats to Spike Lee for getting 2 on this list. He could easily have more when you think how highly things like 25th Hour are regarded.

* Also - the "toxic male" directors are almost all here as opposed to S&S - Polanski, Allen, Peckinpah, Griffith etc
* Stewart, Lemmon and Dustin Hoffman - top 10ish American actor guys have 2 appearances each - again greatest male actors - have the most presence on the list and that's even after the big 4 actors - at least among Americans......especially if your an American-centric list like this.....
* Side note : It's pretty funny (no pun) to see the comedies in order - and the weirdish drop after The General (no Philadelphia Story, Lady Eve, Sullivan's Travels, etc)
Bringing Up Baby City Lights Annie Hall Some Like It Hot The General Dazed and Confused Waiting For Guffman Pink Flamingos Bridesmaids The Graduate

If Waters is making the list, it should be for Female Trouble. Good to see Intolerance make the list. Even though we want to erase Birth of a Nation from existence, Griffith still deserves his due and Intolerance is a much better, more ambitious film anyway that was released only a year after Birth of a Nation. Not a great list but to echo film socialism, not as bad as I was expecting from variety

Listen, I like the movie... but any list of 100 greatest films of all time that has My Best Friend's Wedding at 71 is not one to look any further into.
As per all these lists-- some head scratchers, some obligatory every-list-must-have inclusions, and some actual inspired choices.

As per all these lists-- some head scratchers, some obligatory every-list-must-have inclusions, and some actual inspired choices. I kinda disagree with this take. This list is very un-snobbish. It does try to cover a lot of ground, from arthouse to mainstream. Romantic Comedies are one of the most popular, but disrespected genres and My Best Friend's Wedding is one of the most enjoyable and watchable ones from arguably the golden age of Hollywood rom-coms (the 90's). Is it the 71st best film of all time? Who the fuck knows. It's all subjective. But it is a terrific and worthy example of it's genre, so I have no issue with it being given a boost in stature. Newer examples of Rom-coms need to enter the canon. It can't just be 80 year old movies like Bringing Up Baby and The Philidelpia Story that are considered for lists like this. And it shouldn't just be stuff that was nominated for Oscars either.

* Btw this was done by Peter Debruge, Owen Gleiberman Lisa Kennedy, Jessica Kiang, Tomris Laffly, Guy Lodge and Amy Nicholson if you like their writing ....it's hardly comparable to S&S, TSPDT or even the AFI lists - just in the depth of the poll, weight of the poll and for the non compos mentis types (um) who want to talk about "moving goal posts"......this poll isnt in the same sport ....much less where the goal posts are..... *My Best Friend's Wedding" being that high or on the list at all - yeah no one buys that - I mean like I said just for comedy especially the list isn't believable as being even English language canonical - it's just much more representative of movies a few people like which isn't the same thing .........but it's neither fish nor fowl really as a poll...... *SPR at 10 is well - I wouldn't pick it - but I also wouldn't have blinked if it was placed lower - but 10 is too much imo. I love the start and progressively love it (much) less as it goes along but I think you can make a reasonable case for its rival film from the same year as being "better" - arguable though - The Thin Red Line .....that would have been good to have some counterpicks..... * Mean Streets is my favorite Scorsese - I think "best" is Taxi Driver though - but that was quite a curveball.....I'm guessing that's Owen Gleiberman pushing it - who is at times a great critic / writer and at times like a guy who seems to have nothing in common with that other Owen Gleiberman - he's a hard guy to read in how he feels about things ........but I know he's a huge Mean Streets fan.....

A bit basic but I'll take basic over deliberate Film Twitter hot takes (the new sight and sound and alot of these type lists you see these days). Obviously some individual films I don't like but that's going to be the case with any top 100 besides my own.

Obviously some individual films I don't like but that's going to be the case with any top 100 besides my own. Bingo. I'll take this list over that recent Sight & Sound thing. The out-of-nowhere elevation of Jeanne Dielman to "Greatest Film Of All Time" status was kinda embarrassing and so obviously agenda driven and made even a once reliable cinephile bible like Sight & Sound feel questionable.
