Didn't know if I should start a new thread for this or just post under the soccer thread so I just started a new thread. If a mod feels like this can be moved to that thread, go for it. Africa: 9 teams Asia: 8 teams CONCACAF: 6 teams Europe: 16 teams Oceania: New Zealand South America: 6 teams Playoffs: 6 teams in 3 playoffs, winners advance to the World Cup. Each confederation sends 1 team to the playoffs. Hosts qualify automatically as usual. FIFA will discuss how to handle joint bidders (USA/Mexico/Canada). www.foxsports.com/soccer/gallery/2026-world-cup-qualifying-spots-allocation-expansion-051017?sf77842985=1

I'm still not sure that I like this 48 teams thing. It seems a little strange that almost a quarter of the teams eligible for qualification will ultimately play in the tournament. I guess in the end it'll give some teams who qualify sporadically for the World Cup more of a chance to make it (I'm thinking about Ireland here ), and most likely some teams will start to get through for the first time, so that's a good thing. Unfortunately, I do foresee a whole bunch of one sided matches were some lesser teams who usually wouldn't be in the World Cup get trounced, which I don't think is good for the quality of the competition overall.
