A while ago, I was in an international grocery store that was playing "Danger" by The Flirts. I caught enough of the lyrics that I was able to hunt down the song at home, and fell in love with this very 80s girl band. I've done this with some others too, but this was the success story. Am I the only one to do this?

All the time. The shazam app can be helpful with this, but its not 100% perfect. Off the top of my head, "Rumore" by Raffaella Carra, "I Know There's Something Going On" by Frida, and "Soul Meets Body" by Death Cab for Cutie were all songs I heard while out and had to do hunt down once I got home.

Usually I do that if it's a cover - I am like "I know this song........ but not this version"......
One of my favorite songs - ever maybe - I found that way.....and that may have been before Shazam - but how old do you think I am ffs
