Awesome. Harris and Foster as father-son seems like a no brainer match, I'm surprised they hadn't been paired before!

Such exciting news! Thank you so much for tagging me, stephen . I seem to recall we had talked about a potential film adaptation after she had won her Tony. So clearly we weren't the only ones thinking it. I'm just scared that it might be too stagey. But we are in dire need of Ben Foster to get his first nomination (I think that in a non-slapgate world, he'd be in the running this year for Emancipation) and Academy Award winner Ed Harris needs to be spoken into reality.

A little surprised no one else from the stage show came with her - Gabriel Byrne or Michael Shannon - but that's a stellar movie line-up

pacinoyes - No! We're not out of movie ideas! Jessica Lange and Ed Harris are here to save cinema. Did you read the Times piece?!

I read the play three months ago, with foreword written by Lange, and imagining her as Mary as I was reading. Can't wait to see the film. I'm sure she'll be great.

I wonder if this might wind up getting pushed to 2024. The current strike means that there won't be much promotion on the horizon (which will affect film festivals as well; Venice and Telluride especially will feel the loss the most), and as far as I know it doesn't have a US distributor. And with a surfeit of Best Actress contenders, they might decide to hold off on it until 2024, when the field looks a bit thinner.

I reckon this will happen with quite a few contenders (probably some surprising big ones as well as smaller ones) and this seems like a likely candidate. Also distributors that will have multiple contenders might be smart to postpone some of them for 2024.

I think the Emmys will do what happened in 1980 and most of the nominees not attend (the year Powers Boothe famously crossed the picket line to accept his Emmy), Venice and Telluride will likely be ghost towns as far as Hollywood goes, and I think that changes the dynamic a great deal for the season. Someone like, say, Ryan Gosling gets a hell of a boost for having all of his promotion happen right before the strike, and he can remain in the public consciousness for quite a while and hold onto traction.

TylerDeneuve - GREAT - new and looooooooooooong interview - and some more sad news on this film: www.vulture.com/article/jessica-lange-in-conversation.html Were you worried it would never see the light of day?Sure. I feel the same way about the film we did of Long Day’s Journey Into Night. An adaptation of the play shot in Ireland with Ed Harris and Ben Foster in 2022; production halted and was restarted because of financing problems, according to the New York Times. Who knows if it will ever come out? It’s in some weird limbo. It’s not finished. Oh, is it a rights issue? A money issue?
I don’t know what it is, exactly. Money? Differences of opinion?

pacinoyes - Thank you so much for tagging me - Lange is such a brilliant, fascinating person - I look forward to savoring this interview. Very disheartening news about the film, though... I certainly hope an agreement can be made to bring it to cinemas.

Wouldn't be the first time Jessica Lange won for a movie that sat on the shelf for an undetermined period of time.

She's lost to very good performances like Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman but she would be a 2 time winner in my books as well just not for the ones she won for.
I think itll be hard for her to win for this tho. They're desperately trying to get Ronan an Oscar.

Well in a few weeks she could win a 2nd Tony...and I'll be seeing that play in April....only Helen Hayes has 2 Oscars and 2 Tonys for a female and Freddy Jekyll / Hyde March for the Men...........Lange is an awards beast either way......it's what enters her into that "sorta Streep" category......or as close as anyone gets to Streep really........

I mean, Blitz is rumoured to be an ensemble picture so they could easily get away with this. Ronan's trajectory is very Winslet-esque, but what concerns me is I can see a scenario where she wins and then follows Winslet's post-Oscar trajectory of getting ghosted by the Academy once that "overdue" narrative is used up.

That's another thng about actors though - people may complain about running fake campaigns in the 2 categories - but actors get cheated out of having the right to get 2 acting category nominations in 1 year .....so it is all good......it's not like the Oscars are inherently decent anyway yanno? What I want to see is someone double win a BA / BSA in a year.......people don't talk about that shit enough but when that happens it will throw all of our pronosticating into the fucking trash where it belongs tbh
