Dark CityWhen I watched The Matrix, I really dug the first half hour, which is all about a question: "What is the Matrix?" For those thirty minutes, it was a creepy, existential horror movie about the meaning of life and man's place in a cold universe. And then the Wachowskis answered that question, and we got a fun fantasy action movie instead (nothing wrong with that). Dark City is that first half hour of The Matrix extended for two hours. Edit: Thoughts on the ending here. I didn't like the final confrontation of the movie, but the epilogue is spectacular and easily lifts the movie up. John creating his own fantasy world to replace the previous one is a great image: the laughably fake "Shell Beach" outside of the city walls as he woos the woman he loved in a previous life is just as much of a dream of a dying race as what the Strangers sought for. It's a haunting end that doesn't sugarcoat man's penchant for oblivion over knowledge.

Central Station
It's a pretty basic tearjerker melodrama. Nothing too special, but it's fine for what it is. I would have preferred a movie entirely about writing letters tbh.

Saving Private Ryan (rewatch)
Same opinion as before. Spielberg does G R E A T technical work here, but the movie is simultaneously cloying and distant. The battle sequences carry no weight because every one the characters are stereotypes of American soldiers. The movie tries to make a big deal out of these bad (in this setting, anyway) men finding a sort of redemption through this mission, but they never actually have to struggle with their own morality or ideals. It's a big flag-waving movie.
And that's fine, I guess. It isn't my thing. It just leaves the battles. No matter how realistic your sound a visual effects are (and they are magnificent), it is too easy for me to turn my head to the side and go "I'm not actually in a war zone" and the immersion is broken. You need to make me want to immerse myself in the story. I need something to latch onto. There is nothing like that here.

That horrible moment when I'm told that I forgot to count a ballot... It's too late to change it now. I know what happened (I was told not to count a ballot until some changes were made, and I never received the changes), but I feel awful for it. I feel that I should publicly mention the mistake, for transparency's sake. If you wish to know the changes that would have happened, they are below: Best picture: Perfect Blue in - Central Station out Best director: Perfect Blue in - The Hole out Best actress: Gwyneth Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love) in - Jane Horrocks out Best adapted screenplay: Perfect Blue in - Gods and Monsters out Best film editing: Tie broken, Dark City out Best production design: Elizabeth in - Pleasantville out Best sound editing: Ronin in - The Mask of Zorro out Best choreography: The Thin Red Line in - Who Am I? out Best song: Reflection (Mulan) in - The Plagues out

Hopefully this still sufficed as a ballot. Cool results though, plenty to catch up on and vote for in a month ". Certainly nothing to fret over, Martin Stett , just catching up on stuff I missed and saw the AMARA results.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The commentary gets lost in the excess. Depp is sort of fun, but the movie around him is such a slog to get through.

Gods and Monsters
Clumsy, maudlin Oscar bait. The transitions to the flashbacks, Clay's on-the-nose exposition of his backstory (at multiple points to multiple people) and Jimmy's sudden revelations at the end are handled with all the grace of a sumo wrestler figure skating. McKellen is adequate.

Due to circumstances outside of my control, I was unable to harass people into voting for the past week. I am extending the voting deadline for one more week to allow stragglers to get in.

The Opposite of Sex
Gay stereotypes galore plague this annoying comedy. Lisa Kudrow and Lyle Lovett carry the movie, but there's only so much they can do with a script that ages like milk. The issue isn't that it is offensive - I couldn't care less about that - but rather that it is soooo on-the-nose obvious in its dramatic arcs, spelling everything out for us.
By the way, you got the actresses backwards. If anything, Kudrow is lead and Ricci is support. Sure Ricci narrates and starts the plot, but we see it through Kudrow's eyes, and Kudrow supplies the tiny little bit of soul the film offers. I'm pretty sure that she has more screen time as well.

I voted, but I do not see LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE (in the major categories), or BUFFALO '66. Those should be in there. Buffalo 66 is literally one of my favorite films of all-time.

Is there a reason why SIL didn't make picture, director, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, or original screenplay line-up? I mean, I get that people are still upset that SIL beat out SPR. In my eyes, SIL is better than SPR, but not the best movie of 1998. Truman Show is the my favorite of the bunch.

They just weren't popular. Shakespeare in Love got 0 votes for picture, and Buffalo 66 got a single point.

The Hole, or: A Plumber Named Godot
I despised Tsai's The Wayward Cloud, so I wasn't holding much hope for this. Thankfully, The Hole is funny, touching, sweet, all that good stuff. A romantic comedy for old fuddy duddies that aren't into all this sex and rock music kids are into these days. I do think the musical numbers - pretty as they may be - are fluffy padding that stop the film's momentum in its tracks, but aside from that, I thought it was quite lovely. It doesn't set my world on fire, but this is a sweet, kind little movie.
