Movie officially released on November 4 on Apple TV
I watched it, and it turned out as I expected: boring with good performances.
It’s great to see my girl Jennifer Lawrence in a role that’s age appropriate and not working with DOR, and she’s good in this and so is Brian Tyree Henry
Having said that, nothing about either of their performances is worth Oscar buzz. People being like “Omg their chemistry is off the charts!” I do not see that at all. It was just fine. The hype is ridiculous honestly
I think writing is weak and kinda superficial. The characters feel underdeveloped. Or rather the final product bc I know this movie had a bunch of re-shoots and the editing went in a different direction bc the director thought JLaw and BTH had something special. What that was, I have no idea bc it didn’t come through for me. There was more chemistry between JLaw and Russell Harvard, who plays her brother.
It felt like the movie was building up to something but it never materialized. The ending was a dud.
I’m glad JLaw is back, but I wish she came back with a better movie

The movie is very small but it does small pretty well. Just a nice little slice-of-life type of experience elevated by an absolutely wonderful performance by Jennifer Lawrence who's as genuine here as she's ever been on the screen. The finale felt somewhat abrupt but thinking back on it, the movie did end in a place that was pretty logical for its low-key character-based nature. It's not among the more memorable or hard-hitting pieces of 2022 cinema but it's a decent grounded drama.

Just watched this movie today. Thought it was terrific, from beginning to end. Great performances from Jennifer Lawrence and Brian Tyree Henry. I very much enjoyed the small contained environment. 90% of the movie is just two people talking to each other and laying out their problems. There also a lot of unspoken words between the two leads, which I very much appreciated. The ending was great too, reminded me of Sideways . I can see how some might find it "boring". There are no action sequences. Nobody punches everybody. The shots last for a long time -- simple film-making at its finest. We don't see any flashbacks to Lawrence's character in Afghanistan. But for me, I appreciate a movie about characters communicating. This was never boring for me.

That Brian Tyree Henry was able to make something out of this barebones characterization is a tribute to his skill but J-Law just disappears entirely into the scenery. Not even a slow-burn, more like a slow simmer that goes on for 90 minutes and never materializes into anything. Lowkey to the point of nonexistence.

The two leads were excellent with what they were given, but yeah, the rest of the film just kinda fades as it goes. I was happy to see Russell Harvard crop up, though.

Yeah, I know that Henry is enjoying the lion's share of the awards buzz for the film, but for me, this was Lawrence's best performance since Winter's Bone.

I have a soft spot for Red Sparrow and I think she was one of the better parts of Don't Look Up, but yeah, I can get behind that.

She’s barely done anything worth watching since Winter’s Bone. Love her but kinda agree 😭. She was great in mother! though and I really liked The Hunger Games franchise. I hate how she worked with DOR so many times. Based on her interview with NYT, it sounds like CAA was negatively influencing her choices. She said something about scripts she would’ve loved not making it to her, and CAA was more focused on commercial than artistry. Glad she left that agency. I’m hoping her 30s will be a return to the JLaw that got her first Oscar nom

Just saw it. What a nothing movie. It's not moving, kind of poorly-written, the characters are paper thin, Lawrence and Henry had some good moments but super bland over all. Not happy with Henry's nom at all.
