How about Hell No? She can't even act highly emotional scenes believably. Zendaya on Euphoria is a better actress than Blanchett's entire career.

What this thread is - is based on a Rolling Stone argument published in the last couple of days - that argues MALE or FEMALE - that Blanchett is THE best. Just like on MAR this question comes up and is the same argument: 1. GOAT - which is a separate argument and this board picked its GOATs (in order Pacino, Brando, DDL, De Niro, Nicholson; females: Streep, Bergman, Huppert) - Blanchett I think finished 6th for actresses iirc 2. Greatest Living Actor - which to me is 5 people across MALE & FEMALE who may be "THE GOAT" DePac, Nicholson, Streep, Huppert...... slightly lesser males imo DDL, Dustin Hoffman, Hackman etc - but for actress Liv Ullman is alive, Vanessa Redgrave is alive, Gena Rowlands is alive ffs etc. 3. Greatest Working Actor - This is what they really mean in the article and what people usually mean - and the answer is - "She IS the greatest actress in English currently" - and with DDL retired arguably greater than any male working currently.......not sure about this - this is far more arguable......BUT: I would say it's quite logical to say whatever praise you want to say and you can make a convincing case - she has as many great performances, and comparable high points than anyone aside from the big 5 above - and I haven't seen TAR yet - she has several great movies, Oscar nominated for BP, great auteurs and that list is expanding rapidly - she can do comedy quite adeptly which is a big deal....... In terms of "working actors" yes I'd say sure why not - she's not (yet) DePac, Nicholson, Streep, Huppert but she is in that same level to me as DDL - just outside the GOAT tier .......the difference is she's just 53 and has a lot more great work to come...... she's the Queen basically......pfft:

I think Kate Winslet is better than Cate Blanchette.
Isabelle Adjani is the best of the best.

Well, I wouldn't blast her like that because I think she is fantastic, but no. There are too many great actors still active. And it matters none to me if they are past their prime now.

No... I like her, but she wouldn't even make my personal Top 100.

Gotta say now that I've seen Tár - and I called it one of the 10 best English language lead performance since 1967 - male or female - so if anybody needs to calm down......um, it's....... me .......but this is a separating performance - separating from her female peers and her own place in film history culture. Just in the logistics of this performance are the reason people are going to say stuff "like" Rolling Stone said: There is no female in English certainly who could hold the screen for 2 hours 40 minutes - and speak in multiple languages - and master the many demands of this role....like I'm not even assessing the performance - I've already done that in the Last Great Performance thread - I'm just saying that as a starting point she obliterates so much.......when people next to me in my theater were raving her German accent while she is speaking German (wtf, !) .......she has a huge perceived advantage in how she's regarded...........and when you have a huge advantage over your peers people then have to stretch the praise like Rolling Stone did - "Best Living", "GOAT, etc.

You've never seen Sophie's Choice? Well, I listed the ~10 English language performances I'd lump this in with in the other thread and that ^ was one of them but no English speaking female could do it now imo........I am anxiously awaiting our eventual "who else could have been Lydia Tár" threads - as if - that should be good for a few laughs .......

I had great admiration, for doing a very difficult thing, that is not being only a great actress, but also have a very private but succesful life, being married and raising 4 children, and making like 5 movies/play/serie per year.-

Oh honey, of course Blanchett isn't our greatest working actor... That's just preposterous!
It's me! But I do remember Blanchett being touted as the successor to Streep's crown as GOAT as early as 2005 and there does seem to be no stopping her (She's gonna sweep with Tár 2022). She's definitely in the top 5 along with Swinton, Winslet, Blanchett, and Cotillard... with myself being at the front of the list.
Most people won't know this but I was offered Tár first, two years earlier... It was called Tart then... and it was about a trolley bus conductor who was forcing her passengers to sleep with her for rides... before what she's doing is exposed and the passengers push her off the bus into an oncoming truck. Naturally there were scheduling conflicts as I was doing something with Tequila so I couldn't do it. So I said, 'Give it to Blannie, she looks like she could do with another Oscar.' Obviously with Blannie onboard, the script was rewritten to suit her range, she's nowhere near as athletic as I am and wouldn't have been able to do some of the scenes... Anyway, the rest is history.

I've already spoken in this thread ......but one thing that's fun (to me anyway) is compare her to males and start thinking of the "Jeanne Dielman" big picture (um) / long run of how actors are remembered - in her generation and outside of it (leaving Streep/Huppert and um, DiCaprio out atm)....... Sometimes you don't see the history while history is being made in front of your eyes * Noticeably better at lightening up / comedy than DDL & Brando (GOAT contenders) and Hopkins, Duvall, Washington (generational greats) * Far less crapola than DePac (GOAT contenders) * Wider dramatic range than Nicholson (GOAT contender) - or most big movie actors who made it "look easy" : Hackman, Newman, Lemmon and Hanks (generational greats - or GOAT rivals - Hackman etc - just outside the very top tier) * Better filmography than Washington and Kidman (her specific generational rival, but not really imo) * I am pretty sure she's the most lauded film actor - male or female - not only of her era but by the time this year is done - ever - since this is THE era to do such thing (?) I said this somewhere before - what she is in the process of doing - essentially - is to synthesize the best elements of "DDL's "perfection" and the not chasing awards "coolness" of the American GOATs - ie she appears to be able to play anything - which is not really true - no actor can play everything .......but in the way De Niro for example could be great in an offhand way in say something relatively light as Midnight Run in addition to Jeanne Dielman Raging Bull - and DDL couldn't really - she appears to be able to replicate both types across that full spectrum.............it gives the iillusion of playing "anything" This is her with her Goya Award ffs...

I think she's the best right now in terms of her current form. DePac, Streep, Ed Norton (Yes, I included him, don't @ me) might have been better at other times in their life but not right now.

The way she grabs that Tim Tab... without flinching! Even then, you could see she was going to be very popular with Academy members.

Greatest living actress? No, that's Huppert, and she's still behind Judy Davis for me too. Greatest working actress? Of course.... no one right now is so obviously, amply, ridiculously at the peak of their powers and she's also so far this decade's best actor/actress by a mile. She works more than anybody and across episodics, big features, experimental features, theater..... It's both unfathomable and fathomable and fun to predict her near future - how much higher can she go? Wait, she's already near the very top! Though I must say....... If we took this to vote I think MsMovieStar could really pull rank and be voted Best Ever And Always. She just has so many fans - How else to veer the heat of Acapulco? And thank goodness (and don't forget badness) that Tar is doing so well, I hear you're already cast in Tar 2: Bachanalia, and I hear the script to Three Tarquila, Floor! is coming along nicely (we're going to be floored, alright).
