Not the “best songs” - we have a thread for 2022 best / fave songs & albums geesh- but songs you liked that were unusual, passed over, hard to find, misunderstood or just flying under the radar …..
Peter Doherty & Frédéric Lo - “Abe Wassenstein” - This might make my 10 best albums - when usually I just stop after about 6 or 7……This is the simplest song on it - done in a guileless, offhand manner ……it comes late on the record and hits with a surprising weight in its full context
The Roxies - “Beat of the Street” - German band - completely ignored in the US for a fine album way back in January. The kind of 2 minute rebel song Pitchfork would have hyped at one time as part of The Return of Rock!…….but certainly not now…….it’s worth seeking out ……
Wet Leg - “Red Eggs / Primo Skin / Girlfriend / Obvious / I Want To Be Abducted (By A UFO)” - They’ve played all of these live - all on Youtube - but haven’t recorded any (yet?) - How many of these endlessly appealing songs do they have stashed anyway - and is this an album #2 preview?
Screeching Weasel - “Pandora’s Eyes” - Ben Weasel’s latest curveball song - sly tempo changes that give the simultaneous effect of a bouncy Rock song and pretty ballad - it’s neither; the use of the name “Pandora” while lacerating himself lyrically and joyously shouting “Oh!” at the guitar break to make this song about duplicity even harder to read ….
Colleen Green - “College Rock” - Bandcamp only song that sounds like her terrific, deceptive album Cool (2021). The only way to hear it is to find it on bandcamp because she’s stoned and can’t be bothered about her Art…….she’d laugh at it even being called Art probably tbh…..

Hmmm, in listening to the song, I don't hear any tempo changes... But I can add it to my list of songs that use the Pachelbel's Canon chord progression!

I've got a few: Sakis Tolis - "I Name You Under Our Cult"- This is kind of a reworking of Rotting Christ's song "The Fourth Knight of Revelation" from their 1993 debut album, but it shows that Sakis Tolis (who IS Rotting Christ) is the master of creating dark foreboding atmosphere just with electric guitars and minimal synths and other orchestrations. Great song, probably the best on his solo album. Nytt Land - "Dark Country. Ritual" - This is a reworking of the bands song "Ritual" that kept the original traditional folk throat singing/chanting, but put it over a backdrop of acoustic guitar music that kind of reminds of country. Very unique and interesting song. Sigh - "Satsui" - This song is vintage Sigh from their Imaginary Sonicscape era and it's great. Fantastic and unique blend of black metal and psychedelic like only the Japanese masters can do. Epica - "The Final Lullaby" - This is Epica with the addition of a saxophone. I think there's nothing more to be said.
