Not the best and worst - that's another thread - pffft - but those too fawned over .........or not fawned over enough: Someone show some balls and put Kendrick Lamar on BOTH lists
All rated by me in The Last Album You've Listened To Thread for the curious, the opinionated, the morbidly obese:
Overrated:
Alvvays - Blue Rev - A very fine, bittersweet album, I like it a lot. But it's also too stretched out in all those honey-drenched hooks and that pays diminishing returns as it goes on and also on repeated listens too - it's too highly praised for all its striking initial qualities. Sort of the 2022 Fiona Apple: "really good .......but not THAT good"
Big Thief - Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You - Not a bad record but an awfully titled one, overpraised, also (way) too long and self-conscious regurgitation of the Basement Tapes ......... about as 2022 as a pet rock or bean bag chair.......it has its moments yes - but the critics who say they play this "whole thing" are probably lying
Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There - Well performed Prog Folk Indie wankery / gibberish that's about as interesting as watching paint dry or worse being told that the paint is actually very complex and awesome and you should admire everything that went into such a very fine paint.
This will age like soggy cheese fries .............Don't believe the hype
Underrated:
Kiwi Jr. - Chopper - Their best record is also their lowest rated on Metacritic. A bit like Divine Fits - and that was underrated too come to think of it ......
Peter Doherty and Frédéric Lo – The Fantasy Life of Poetry and Crime - This is an album just begging to be ignored, skipped over, undervalued, dismissed, rediscovered, eventually admired, respected and maybe ........by old souls........deeply loved.
Jeanines - Don't Wait For A Sign - It's gotten some good reviews but it's so short (13 songs, just over 20 minutes!) that you miss the artistry and the craft and dismiss it - it's far harder to do this than it appears........ About as good as Alvvays or at least as evocative in the same mood - and more ruthlessly edited (um) ..............except Jeanines play the absolute wrong kind of music - unhip, daft twee Pop.
They've utterly mastered it on this record though - which is a kind of major accomplishment. I made fun of this as being "a masterpiece of stuff I don't give af about" ........it's a maddening collection of contradictory critical reasoning criteria and also in how you choose to spend your free time.......
