I will use your Denzel disqualifying logic on that one though Ardant was a fairly late breakthrough herself. Maybe Nathalie Baye to round out the musketeers.

Interesting article I'm just placing here - to show how those 4 - or 5 guys are still seen and the American actors people argue as belonging IN their class are different from their exclusive mystique and allure. Nicholson still turning down films - this is from World of Reel but it sources a podcast so give me a break - it mentions Jack, DePac and Hackman as the great(est) post-1960s actors.......which I really think is the de facto American top 4 ever now - post-Brando - post 50s - unless Hoffman does something amazing pre-Death....I would say DePac and Jack are the only actors I personally can make a case for as the (English language) GOATpost-Brando and I rank Hoffman a bit higher at his peak than Hackman ........ but one thing to say for Jack and Gene.......they took themselves out of the game awfully early (last movie 73, Hackman 74). In a lot of ways Smith, Redgrave, Jackson, Dench (or Mirren?) are like "a big 4 of actresses" because they are lumped together, they are hard to mention without mentioning at least one of the others and t's not really possible to break into their circles - ie you can be as "great" an actor but they're held at a different "reverence" status.************************ "Nicholson is a national treasure, right up there in the pantheon of the great post-60s American actors, definitely alongside Pacino, De Niro and Hackman. His charismatic, loose style of acting is one for the ages — the sardonic drifter, the eternal outsider, a man that always rebelled against a societal structure"www.worldofreel.com/blog/2023/11/7/kr11xcszuuwpl9i0brqclff2918owh

Michelle Williams is getting to that level, though (Streep, Close, Lange). I think her (surprise?) nomination for The Fabelmans (after virtually every pundit had written her off) is totally indicative of how esteemed she is by her peers.

Her deciding to give up a potential layup win in Supporting Actress to run in a far more competitive category for no reason other than her believing she was the lead of Steven Spielberg's autobiographical story was the surprise. No one really doubted she would get in, but her win equity dropped to nil. She is certainly esteemed, and if she wins the Grammy this year as she deserves to for reading Britney Spears's autobiography, she could conceivably be an EGOT winner down the line.

Observation: I may have missed it but no one mentioned Julianne Moore (?).......and as you've seen lately people now rank her very high..... TylerDeneuve -how would you answer this now? (I think this was your OG thread ) ......

pacinoyes - I honestly have no idea... So many combinations of actresses that include Meryl Streep and Jane Fonda make sense to me. We are spoiled for choice.
