it's that time again. Time for the monthly roundup of our favorite movie-related things. August was sort of a mixed month for me. Watched a total of 26 new films including a lot of 50s classics that I wanted to love more than I did (including a Searchers rewatch which confirms that it's just not for me). Saw some more great 2022 entries (new Cronenberg scratches all the right itches), that Carey Williams debut Emergency which is a provocative spin on the college party movie, and Kogonada's exceedingly tender After Yang.
top 2022 viewings
1. Emergency (Carey Williams)
2. Crimes of the Future (David Cronenberg)
3. After Yang (Kogonada)
4. The Phantom of the Open (Craig Roberts)
5. On the Count of Three (Jerrod Carmichael)
6. The Black Phone (Scott Derrickson)
7. Prey (Dan Trachtenberg)
top 50's viewings
1. The Trouble with Harry (Hitchcock, 1955) - this was delightful
2. High Noon (Zinnemann, 1952)
3. The Defiant Ones (Kramer, 1958)
4. Magnificent Obsession (Sirk, 1954)
5. The Gunfighter (King, 1950)
6. Panic in the Streets (Kazan, 1950)
7. The Bigamist (Lupino, 1953)
top female performances
1. Shirley MacLaine, The Trouble with Harry
2. Kristen Stewart,Crimes of the Future[surgery is the new sex]
3. Vera Miles, The Searchers
4. Katy Jurado, High Noon
5. Cara Williams, The Defiant Ones
6. Barbara Rush, Magnificent Obsession
7. Ingrid Bergman, The Inn of the Sixth Happiness
top male performances
1. Mark Rylance, The Phantom of the Open
2. Curtis & Poitier, The Defiant Ones
3. John Wayne, The Searchers
4. RJ Cyler, Emergency
5. Richard Widmark, Panic in the Streets
6. Edmund Gwenn, The Trouble with Harry
7. Rory Kinnear, Men - the only remotely fun thing about this movie. Give him his own slasher
best cinematography
1. The Searchers - Winton C. Hoch
2. Panic in the Streets - Joseph MacDonald
3. After Yang - Benjamin Loeb
4. Magnificent Obsession - Russell Metty
5. High Noon - Floyd Crosby
honorable tech achievement for The Inn of the Sixth Happiness. Robson and his production crew headed by John Box had an entire Chinese village constructed in Wales. Very representative of the kind of epic scope Box would win 4 Oscars for later, but somehow the film (headlined by Ingrid Bergman, shot by Freddie Young and costumed by Margaret Furse) only nabbed a nomination for Robson's directing.
that's it for me. What'd everyone else love in August?
